CHARLES FRANCIS BATES, OF WELLINGTON, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO-THIRDS TO R.- A. ANDERSON, J. W. CHAPMAN, AND O. C.
KNOWLES, OF SUMNER COU NTY, KANSAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,623, dated May 31 1904.
Application filed September 11, 1903- Serial No. 172,750- (No model.)
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the lister inverted. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the detachable wedge-shape point. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the front portion of' the lister-share. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detachable reversible cutter. Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of the lister, together with the wedge and cutter. Fig. 7 is a 5 perspective view of the front portion of the lister and its attachments, the same being shown inverted. Fig. 8 is a detail section on about line 8 8 of Fig. 2.
The body 1 of the plow or cultivating share are inclined to each other at an obtuse angle. The share is provided at its front end or nose with a longitudinal slot 2, as shown in Fig. 4. Along the sides of said slot 2 extend two wedge-shape flanges 3, .(seeFigs. 2 and 7,) which are arrangedvertical and parallel and cast integral with the body or stock 1. In said slot 2 and betweenthe wedgeshape flanges 3 is arranged the wedge-shape 4 point 4. (See Fig. 3.) I provide such wedge 4 with longitudinal top flanges, which extend laterally over the adjacent edges of the upper sides of the share 1.
2,) the same passing through the vertical and Wedge-shape flanges 3, before described. To the under side of this point 4' I secure a re- VGrsible cutter 6, which is shown detached in The said Wedge or pointis secured by'means of cross-bolts 5, (see Fig.
Fig. 5. i The same consists of a shank having lengthwise slots 6 and a broadened Wedge- 5 shape point 6 having asharpened edge. This cutter is secured to the point 4 by means of screw-bolts 7 (see Fig. 4,) whose heads are countersunk, as shown. It is apparent that the slot 6 permits'the cutter 6 to be adjusted so as to project more or lessbeyond the front extremity of the point 4. The cutter is made of steel and is adapted to be easily reversed or turned, so that it may be used with either side upthat is to say, when the cutter be: comes dull it is detached and turned over and reattached so that the bevel 'at the point or front end produced by the greater wear on one side will be brought or placed on the opposite side. The Wedge-shape point will be 5 constructed of steel, and thus adapted to withstand wear to a high degree. It furnishes a a solid base for attachment of the cutter 6, and the wedge-shaped flanges 2 in turn provide for a strong and durable attachment and sup- 7 port of the point 4. It will be noted from Figs. 6 and 7 that the wedge-shaped flanges 3 project below the shank of the reversible cutter 6 and that the blade of the cutter proper is provided with shoulders which abut the front 7 5 ends of the flanges when the cutter is adjusted to its rearmost position. It will be seen that in any case the shank of the cutter is supportedby the side flanges 3 of the share, and thus braced against lateral leverage and move. 86 ment; also that it maybe adjusted lengthwise, since its sides are parallel to the said flanges.
I provide the side edges of the share 1 with astraight-edge cutter 8, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) which is provided with acute-angle points of similar form, and thus adapted to be reversed end for end when they become unequally worn. The attachment to the share is made by two or more screw-bolts, as shown, and two or more metal wedges 9 of proper-thickness in- 90 terposed between the reversible cutter 8, Fig. 2, and share 1, Fig. 2. These wedges are slotted at 10 in such a manner as to permit adjustment of the cutter 8, Fig. 2, to necessary angle, the thin edge of wedges being to 9 5 the front. f
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
1. The combination, with the share having its front end slotted and provided with parallel integral flanges, of a point inserted and secured between said flanges, and a reversible cutter attached to the under side of said point and projecting beyond it, and means for detachably securing the same, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the obtuse-angle share having its front end slotted and provided With integral parallel flanges arranged vertical, of a point having parallel sides arranged between said flanges, its bottom and top sides'being inclined to each other, and
bolts passing through said flanges and the point, whereby the latter is secured detachably, substantially as described.
3. The combination, With the share having its front end provided with a lengthwise slot, and parallel side flanges formed integrally with the adjacent parts, of a wedge-shaped point having parallel sides and top flanges which overlap the adjacent portions of the share, and means for securing the point, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a plow share and point, of a reversible and extensible cutterconsisting of a shank having lengthwise slots and a Wedge-shaped head as described.
5. In a plow, the combination, with the share, of a cutter applied to one edge thereof, and adjustable wedges arranged between said cutter and share, and bolts securing the parts together, in the manner described.
6. The combination, with the obtuse-angle stock having its front end slotted lengthwise, and provided with parallel side flanges, and a Wedge-shaped point secured between said flanges, of the cutter secured to the under side of the point and extended rearward between the downwardly-projecting portions of the flanges, substantially as described.
