Be it known that I, ALBERT C. CALKINs, of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California,,haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Prospector Ore-Breakers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to provide a light and cheap construction of ore breaker and pulverizer suitable for the prospectors use; and to that end it consists in the peculiar construc tion and arrangement of the parts of the same with reference to securing this object and to permit of easy cleaning, as will be hereinafter are arranged at different levels.

The other jaw A has its axial center in the frame B at a lower point near the legs B.
C is the handle-lever for working the jaws. This lever is hinged at its lower end at 0 to a short link C, whose other end is jointed at b to the stationary upright B of the main frame. Just above the center 0 the lever C is jointed at c to perforated lugs at the upper end of jaw A. The lever is also formed with a rigid horizontal extension at this point projecting at right angles to the lever outwardly from the center 0 and connected by shaft 0 j with the two ends of abail D, the endsof the bail being enlarged at d, as seen in Fig. 2. The bail D passes around and embraces the other jaw A. The U-shaped bend of the bail is seated in half-round bearings in the side flanges of jaw. A near the top and is detachably held in these hearings, sothat it may be lifted out of these bearings to allow the jaw A to be turned down about its center a, as shown in Fig. 3, whenever it isdesired to clean or inspect the interior of the breaker.
'The means for holding the bail in detachable relation to the jaw A consists of a clip E, secured by a bolt or lag-screw e to the outer face of the jaw A .and having its upper end hook-shaped, so as to partially embrace'the bail. E isa horizontal cross-bar extending between the outer flanges of the jaw A and rigidly attached to the same and having a setscrew 6 tapped through said bar and bearing against the clip E. When this set-screw is turned up tight, it forces the clip E against the bail and secures the latter in its seats in the flanges of jaw A. When, however, the set-screw is turned back, so as to allow the clip E to fall away from the bail, the latter may be lifted out of its seats in the jaw to allow the latter to be turned down as described.
The ore-breaker as thus described operates with a compound motion in causing the jaws when the lever C is oscillated to alternately approach and recede from each other and also an up-and-down rubbing motion of one jaw upon the other that produces with a light construction a very powerful crushing effect. By connecting the bail to the rightangular extension of the lever an increased motion is obtained for the front jaw A, and at the same time the powerful effect of a toggle is made available whenever the bail and the centers 0 and 0 fall into line.
On the lever C, opposite its center 0 and adjacent to the jaw A, there is formed a lug 0 which is adapted to take against a lip Z at the top of the jaw A and acts as a: stop to prevent the lever from falling too far outwardly when released.
Having thus described my invention, what I I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An ore-breaker comprising a rigid framework, two jaws formed at their lower ends with perforated lugs offset outwardly from the face of the jaws, and two axes for the jaws passing through the outer ends of the lugs and arranged at different elevations, and means for causing the jaws to approach and recede from each other at the top and to turn about these axes substantially as described.
2. An ore-breaker, comprising two jaws pivoted at their lower ends, aframework having an upright on one side, a link hinged to the top of said upright and extending inwardly toward the jaws, a vertical lever having its fulcrum in the upper portion of one of the jaws and extending below said fulcrum and jointed to the inner end of the link, said lever having also a right-angular projection on a line with its fulcrum and extending outwardly, and a bail jointed to the outward projection from the lever and passing around and embracing the jaws substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. An ore-breaker comprising two aws PiV-r oted at the lower ends, a framework having an upright on one side, a link hinged to the same, a vertical lever having its lower end jointed to said link and jointed at a point above said link to the top of one of the jaws and having also an outwardly-projecting extension, a bail jointed to this outward extension of the lever, and passing around and embracing the other jaw, a retaining-clip for said bail and a cross-bar with a set-screw bearing against this retaining-clip substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. An ore-breaker comprising two jaws pivoted at their lower ends, one of them having at the top a bail-seat and the other one a lip and perforated lugs, a framework having an upright on one side, a link hinged to the same, a vertical lever having its lower end jointed to said link and jointed also to the perforated lugs of the jaw, said lever having on one side an outward extension jointed to the bail and on the other side a stop-lug adapted to engage the lip on the jaw substantially as and for the purpose described.
