Description

etez'sPatent No. 76,151, datccZ Zifarch 31', 1868.
'IMPROVEMENT INPORTABLE WIRE PENOES.
iig tlgemiic mam to in flgist trttirs 'atelit mit making ;mi of flgt same.
TOALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known th'at I, LOUIS W. BOsAItT, of Sto.- Marie, in the county of Jasper, and State of Illinois,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Wire Feuces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification. v
A is a frame for supporting the c'apstans B, which turn on a red, B1, passing through the upper and lower lparts of thelframe. These capstans are independent of one another, and each may be operated vwithout moving the others. The frame is supported by trestles, A1, as shown. The Vertical end-pieces A2 are bored with holes corresponding in position to the number and spaces of the wires to be uscdf The wires O O are attached to one of the cornerpieces'D in building the fnoe, and thence extended through a series of trestles formed like them, but ligliter, and resting on the ground. i The corner-trestles have the Vertical piece extended, to be set in the ground, so as to resist the strainof the wires. In the middle of the side'of the fence are placed the frame A and capstans B. The shaftiof each capstan is bored with a hole corresponding with the position of the wire intended to pass through it. T'he wires are then extended to the other corner'pot, passing through intermediate trestles. Strips are suspended midway between the trestl es from the top board F; through which the wires pass. The top boards F are fastened on the trestles and posts by means of the wires F'. The upper cnds of the vertical`posts of the trestles are notched, to receive the board F, and theends of the boards areishouldered, so as to resist the lateral movement of the trestles, and hold them in position.
When any of the wires require to be slaokened or tightened, it may be done by turnng the capstan, through which it is passed. This may be done by the radial'arms B2. These arms may be held inposition bygwires, B3, fastening them to the frame-posts A2, so as to prevent the capstan's turningv to relax Ithe Wire. Any equivalent device, as a ratchet 'and pawl, zmay be used for this purpose.
When the fence is to be taken down, the ends of the wires being detached, the wires maybe respectively wound upon their own capstans, and the boards F, t'restles, and strips E, taken apart. Iii resetting the fence, the wires are transported in coils on the' axle of the apstans; and, these being placed in the frame A, the wires may be unwound andpassed, through theintermediate trestles and strips E, to .the corner-posts D.
What I claim as my inirention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the wires O, a corresponding number of capstans, B, through the shafts of which the wires pass, and around which they may be wound, substantially as and for the purposc set forth.
2. The combination of the wir s C, corner-posts D, intermediate triang'ular trestlos, boards F; and strips E, constructed and arrangedsuhstantially as descrihod.
3. The combination of the frame A, capstans wires O, and posts D, arranged substantially as described. In testimony whereof7 I have'signed niy name to this specification inthe presence of two snhscribing witnesses.
