Description

UNITED STATES Patented May 31, 1904:.
PATIENT OFFICE.
JESSIE'KIDD, or PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
. *sm'ooTHlne moN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,500, dated May 31, 1904.
' Application filell September 16, 1903. Serial No. 173,438. I I model.)
. v I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ESSIE KIDD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoothing-Irons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to certain new and useful improvements in smoothing-irons, and more particularly to that class used" in the pressing of shirt-waists, fine laces, silk em broidery, and the like.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the drawings I Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im- 1 proved smoothing-iron. Fig. 2 is a sideview thereof, partly in section. position of iron when being heated.
. The base 4 of the smoothing-iron support I make oblong in form,so there will be no possible danger of it tilting over when pressure Fig. 3 shows the The smoothing-iron is provided with a round socket in its edge to receive the end of the arm and is held rigid on the arm by the use of asetscrew' 9. This will permit the iron to be tilted from side to side, as shown in dotted lines- .of Fig. 2, and permit each operator to adjust the arm to suit his particular fancy.
In heating the iron upon the top of the stove arm 8- being. near the surface of stove becomes hot. This is very objectionable in handling, as the iron must be removed from ,the stove and mounted on the base. To overcome the danger of being burned, I wrap the arm with some fireproofing material 10, such as asbestos.
. With the above and other objects in VIEW, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters the arm whereby the iron is capable of rota- I tion on the arm and means for securing the iron on the arm at different adjustments.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of September, 1903. V
' "JESSIE KID'D.
