' COMBINED BED OR COUCH AND BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,443, dated May 31, 1904.
\ Application filed March 5, 1904.
T0 all 1071 0111. it may concern/.-
Be it known thatl, FRANK R. BUCK, a citizen of'th'e United'States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in a Combined Bed or Couch and Bath, o-fwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined couch and vapor or-hot-air bath, theobject of my invention being to provide an apparatus which when closed shall make a strong, durable, and convenient couch or bed or a useful article of furnituresuitablc for a sleeping-room,sitting room, or oflice convenient for professional or pri'vate'use and which when open can be used for a steam-bath or a hot-air bath, and particularly to provide an apparatus of this character which when used asa vapor or hot-air bath shall be free from the objectionable features of producing a suffocating feeling or a weakening effect upon the leather experienced in many other devices .of this character now in use, but,
on the other hand, shall act as a tonic, produc-" ing a vigorous reaction,'stimulating poor'circulation, and cleansing the pores of the skin without undue fatigue.
My invention is also intended to be used with suitable changes as a spray, sponge, hip bath, or for a sun or colored-light bath.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus used as a couch or bed. Fig. Qisa similar broken view' showing the apparatus partly open for the purpose of using it as a bath, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the hot-air chamber. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the apparatus fully opened and in use as a bath. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of thebath-chamber, partly folded up. Fig. 6 is a vertical crosssection of the hot-air chamber on the line B B of Fig. 3. I
' Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable main frame supported upon casters 2 and having a bottom 3 and sides 4. On one side thereof is hinged a lid 5, having at the ends cleats 6, which fit down over the ends of the frame and supported when opened by means of oblique stays 7, which are remov- Serial Ito-196,686. (No model.)
'ably attached in the usual manner for supporting swinging lids; Upon said lid is a spring-mattress 8 and a cover 9 for use as a couch or bed. 3
The main frame is divided by avertical wall i 10 into two portionsa smaller portion 11, which may be called a vestibule, and a larger portion 12,whichcontains the bathingchamber. The side 4 of the main frame at the entrance to the vestibule is cut down and provided with a hinged shutter'13, which is raised and attached by means of a hook and eye in the usual manner when the apparatus is used asa'couch,-and when the apparatus is used for'bathingsaid shutter is let down, leaving a low wall or entrance to the vestibule.
At the-endof the main framenext the vestibule there is provided a transverse shelf or seat 14, upon which thebather can sit when preparing'to enter the bath or after having bathed and when partially'or wholly drying himself before stepping out of the vestibule.
-It is also useful for chiropodistic operations after bathing. It is furthermore of great utility in providing a suitable place for an attendant when one is needed and for the purpose of applying the electric treatment whilev in the bath. On the under side of. the lid and atthe end of the vestibule opposite tothe entrance when the lid is raised is secured a re- .ceptacle l5 fora mirror '16, a timepiece 17 racks 18 for towels, and a rack 19 for brushes or other toilet articles.
2O is a shelf or seat'extending transversely of the main frame and forming the top of the hot-air chamber 21. The transverse wall 10 next to the vestibule-entrance is cut away, as shown at 22, to permit the insertion of the stove 23 for generating heat for the bath. The top 20 is formed with an opening 2 L over said stove, and a boiler 25 is supported thereover, from which the steam issues by a pipe 26, leading down through a hole 455 into an extension 27 from the bathing-chamber under the seat 20. The products of combustion from the stove are led from said hot-air chamber 21 by means of a short elbow 28, having a swinging connection with a pipe 29, loosely supported upon the under side of the lid, and
lid.
forming a draft-pipe for carrying the products of combustion upward when the device is opened.
The walls and top of the bathing-chamber are all supported on the under side of the lid, for which purpose said lid has secured thereto narrow strips 30 transverse to the lid and a strip 31, joining said transverse strips and extending longitudinally of the lid. To the strip 30 on the far side from the vestibule is hinged the rear wall 32 of the bathing-chamber, to which again is secured a narrow strip 33, having hinged thereto the side wall 34 of the bathing-chamber, to the other vertical edge of which is again hinged a portion 35 of the front Wall of said chamber.
47 is a cleat secured to the lower edge of the wall 34, the better to support the same. To the front transverse strip 30, next the vestibule, is-hinged a portion 36 of the front wall, to which again is hinged a second portion 37 Upon the upper edge of the rear wall 32 is hinged the top of the bathing-chamber, which is in four parts a rear part 38, hinged directly to said rear Wall, a part 39, hinged to the free edge of the part 38 and extending over the bathing-chamber next to the lid, a part 40, hinged to the part 39 and extending in front of the bathers head, and a part 41, hinged to the part 38 and lying down upon the far side of the bathing-chamber from the The frame has secured thereon at the rear of the bathing-chamber a shelf or seat 42, and also at the side of the bathing-chamber opposite to the lid is hinged a shelf or seat 43, supported when in use by turn-buttons 44, which extend over the shelves or seats 42 and 20. By reason of this construction the bather can turn around when in the vapor-chamber, when in any such position the feet extending beneath one of these shelves or seats, so that ample room is provided to sit in a comfortable position without unduly enlarging said chamber.
46 represents a thermometer in the bathing-chamber.
48 is a drain-pipe for drawing off the wai ter from the bath.
It will readily be understood that instead of an oil-stove, as is here shown, an alcoholstove may be used or a gas-stove suitably connected by a flexible pipe with a gas-burner.
said frame, and 1 side thereof, sides of a bath-cabinet folded within said frame, and means for supporting said sides, when open, upon said frame and lid, substantially as described.
