PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT J WILSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DISINFECTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,122, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed February l1, 1903. Serial No. 142,849. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT J. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, Manhattan borough, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Apparatus, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification. N
This invention relates to improvements in contrivances of that class extensively availed of for thepurpose of generating and distributing a gaseous disinfectant, such contrivances being commonly known as i disinfecting apparatus.
The object of this invention is to providea disinfecting apparatus which shall be simple and inexpensive as regards construction, durable, efficient, and reliable in operation, convenient in its application to practical purposes, which shall embody features of construction whereby steam or a similar heating medium may be employed in connection therewith, and which shall possess certain well-defined advantages over prior analogous structures.
The invention consists in the novel disposition and relative arrangement of the various parts thereof whereby the attainment of the foregoing object is rendered practicable, in certain combinations, and in certain details of construction, all of which will be specifically referred to hereinafter and set forth in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar referonce numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and as to said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a disinfecting apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section along the line a a of Fig. 1.
In a general sense my invention comprises a jacketed generating-tank having an inletport and a delivery-spout, a charger adjacent to said tank and communicating therewith by way of said inlet-port, and means for controlling the delivery of the contents of said charger to and into said tank, the jacket conjoined with said tank being adapted to permit the use of steam or the like for heating said tank and its contents, the whole comprising a compact portable convenient structure.
Having reference to the accompanying draw ings, I make use of a generating-tank which ordinarily comprises a main portion 2, bottom portion 2', and cover 2. Bottom 2 may be formed integral with the main portion 2, as in the process of casting, may be brazed thereto, or may have a threaded engagement therewith, as illustrated in the drawings. To facilitate the work of assembling the various parts of the device and the gaining of access to the interior of the generating-tank, cover 2 should be removably conjoined with the main portion 2, and to this end I have shown said cover as having a threaded engagement with said main portion.
Generating-tank 2 is cylindricalin cross-sec tion and is provided with exterior threads at its upper portion, such threads serving, primarily, a purpose to be hereinafter explained,
and, secondarily, to receive the cover 2".
3 denotes an uncontrolled delivery-spout for the generating-tank of my improved apparatusyand in connection with such generatingtank I further make use of a jacket, here shown as comprising a main portion 3', a bottom portion 3", and a cap 4. While the bottom 3" and the cap iare shown in the accompanying drawings as having, respectively, a threaded engagement with the main portion 3, one of these parts, and by preference the bottom 3", may be formed integral with the main portion 3 or brazed thereto, it being essential that only one of such parts, and by preference the cap 4, be removably conjoined with the main portion 3 in order to insure convenience in assembling the parts and in gaining access to the interior of said jacket when desired.
4 is a valve-controlled inlet for said jacket, and 4: a valve-controlled exhaust therefor.
Primarily the cap 4: which has an enlarged threaded central opening, is screwed onto the main portion 2 and so that the upper terminus of the latter projects somewhat beyond said cap. Then the depending portion of the generating-tank is let into the jacket aforenamed, and thereafter the cap 4 is screwed onto the main portion of said jacket at the top thereof,
said jacket being cylindrical in cross-section,
exteriorly threaded at its upper portion, and
said cover being shaped and threaded accordingly, all as clearly indicated in the drawings. When the parts are thus assembled, a space 5, surrounding the major portion of the generating-tank, is formed for tie reception of the heating medium, as steam, hot air, or the like, such heating medium being admitted to said space by way of the inlet 11. Cover 2 is then screwed onto the upper extrem'itvof that portion of the generating-tank which projects beyond the cap 4. I further make use of a charger 5, adapted to deliver its contents under control to and into the generating-tank of my improved apparatus. This charger is provided with a delivery-neck 5", which engages the cover 2 at the inlet-port 6, formed in the latter, and is controlled by any appro' priate. device, as the valve 6. Charger 5 is provided with a cover 6", having a fillingnozzle 7 formed integral therewith by preference, and the latter (said nozzle) having a funnel 7 arranged in conjunction therewith to facilitate the operation of fillingsaidcharger.
The nozzle 7 is controlled for venting purposes by any appropriate device, as the valve 7. I
I purpose to employ, in connection with my improved apparatus, an element or commodity adapted to yield a disinfecting gas or vapor under theapplication of heat, such element being first introduced into the charger 5 and thereafter under control as to volume or quantity through proper manipulation of the valves 6 7. into the generating-tank of the apparatus, wherein upon such element being subjected to the action of heat, as by introducing into the space 5 steam, hot air, or the nection the product known as formalin has been found to serve exceptionally well the purposes of the gas or vapor generating element aforenamed, the same yielding under out materially departing from the spirit and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A portable disinfecting apparatus comprisinga heating-jacket having inlet and outlet ports; a movable annular cap for said jacket, having a central screw threaded opening therein; avapor-generating chamber projecting through said opening, engaging with said screw-threads, and partly inclosed in said jacket; a removable cover fitting over the end of said vaporizing-chamber; a vapor-delivery pipe projecting through the cover, and into said vaporizing-chamber; a liquid-charging chamber above the vaporizing-chamber; a
valve for regulating the admission of liquid from said charging-chamber to the vaporizingchamber; and a valve for shutting off the inlet to the charging-chamber when the same is charged, all substantially as described.
