FRANK BRADOC AND WILLIAM FROST, OF ATHENS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO ARPI-IAD SNELL, OF TICE, ILLINOIS.
CARBID-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed October 27, 1910. Serial No. 589,425.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK BRADoo and II'YILLIAM FROST, citizens of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbid-Lamps; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in acetylene gas lamps.
One object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character having an improved arrangement of feed water pipes and gas discharge pipes.
Another object is to provide an improved means for regulating the discharge of the water from the tank tothe carbid holder.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the app-ended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of our improved lamp; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes our improved lamp which consists of a gas generating chamber 2 in which is placed the required quantity of carbid. Arranged above the gas generating chamber is a water tank 3 having a funnel shaped lower end of which is formed as a screw cap 4 adapted to be -engaged with a threaded neck 5 formed around the filling opening in the upper end of the generating chamber whereby said chamber is closed. On the neck 5 and adapted to be engaged by cap 4 is a gasket 6 whereby a gas tight closure is formed for the generator.
In the top of the water tank is arranged a filling openino' which is preferably closed by a screw plug In the lower portion of the water tank and projecting a short distance into the generating chamber, is arranged a combined feed water and gas, discharge pipe 8 on the upper end of which is arranged a valve casing 9 provided with a water inlet opening 10. In the valve casing 9 is arranged a water controlling valve 11 comprising a cylindrical plug recessed or flattened on one side whereby when the plug is turned to the proper position water will be permitted to enter the pipe 8 and flow into the generating chamber. The plug valve 11 is provided with an operating stem 12 which projects through a packed gland 13 or stuffing boX arranged in one side of the water tank as shown.
Connected to the upper portion of the pipe S and projecting through one side of the water tank is a branch gas discharging pipe 14. The pipe 14 curves upwardly to a vslight extent as shown and projects a slight distance beyond the outer side of the tank. In the projecting outer end of the pipe is arranged a burner tip 15 which may be of any suitable construction. In the pipe 8 at the inner end of the branch pipe 14: is arranged a deflecting plate 16 whereby the water passing down feed pipe will be prevented from running into the branch pipe 14.
In the operation of the lamp a suflicient quantity of carbid is placed in the generating chamber and when it is desired to use the lamp the valve 9 is opened to permit the desired amount of water to pass into the generating chamber and onto the carbid therein thus forming the gas which passes through the pipe 8 to the branch pipe 14 and thence to the burner tip 15.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus we claim is In an acetylene gas lamp, a generating chamber, a water tank, a cap arranged on said tank and adapted to form a closure for said generating chamber, a combined feed water and gas discharging pipe arranged in said tank and projecting a short distance into said generating chamber, a branch gas conducting pipe connected to said combined water and gas pipe, and projecting through the side of said tank, a deflecting plate arranged in said combined pipe over the inner described our invention what end of said branch pipe, a valve easing on f set oul1 hands in presence of two subscribing the upper endL of sold ooinblned Water and Wltnesses.
gas pipe, a Water controlling Valve n said FRANK BRADOC. casing and a stem connected to said valve WTILLIAM FROST. and plojectng through the side of Jthe tank `Witnesses: whereby the Valve is operated. JAMES E. FULTON,
In testimony whereof We have hereunto T. H. HORNBACK.
