Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 3, 191a.
Application filed December 2?, 1911. Serial No. 868,026.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KIEVE WV. HoLLrNoswonrr-r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia,'in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for generating acetylene gas, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel form of generator in which the amount of gas generated is automatically regulated.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application which show a sectional view through the generator.
Referring now to the drawing, I have shown therein a main casing 1 which forms the gas generation chamber. Disposed within the casing is a container 2 for the calcium carbid 3. In the present instance this container is shown as a wire basket. Disposed above the casing 1 is a tank 4: which is secured to the casing 1 by means of the bolts 5, a gasket 6 being interposed to make the fitting tight. The tank 4 is provided with an opening 4. at its top for the admission of water, this opening being covered by a screw cap 7 which is provided with a small air opening 8 controlled by a valve 9. A tube 10 communicates With the interior of the casing 1 and extends through the tank 4, this tube being provided with a cock 11. Another tube 12 extends partly through the tank, being curved to one side and being provided with a cock 13. Another tube 1 1 extends through the tank and into a housing 15 on top of the tank. The tube 14 contains a piston 14 which is arranged to engage one end of a lever 16. The other end of the lever 16 is in engagement with the upper end of a valve stem 17 of a needle valve 18 which is disposed in a tube 19 having openings 20 communicating with the interior of the tank 4. The bottom of the tank is provided with an opening 21 which is adapted to be closed by the needle valve 18. A spring 22 in the housing 15 keeps the valve 18 in an upper position.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the generator, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The oarbid is first put in and the tank 4- is secured to the casing 1 by means of the bolts Water is introduced into the tank 1 through the opening t after which the screw cap 7 is placed in position. As the water flows out through the openings 20 and 21 it drops down upon the carbid and acetylene gas is generated. As the water flows into the casing 1 air is drawn through the opening 8 to take the place of the water. As the pressure of the gas rises it will force the piston 14* upwardly thereby causing the needle valve 18 to shut off the flow of water through the medium of the lever 16. The gas is used by connecting the feeding device with the stop cock 11. By connecting to the stop cook 1 part of the gas may be used for lighting purposes. When the pressure decreases suiliciently within the receptacle 1, the spring 22 will open the needle valve to again permit water to have access to the carbid and the gas will begin to be generated again. It will thus be seen that the action of the generator is automatic.
I claim:
1. An acetylene gas generator comprising a main casing arranged to contain carbid, a water tank disposed above said main casing and provided with an opening for feeding water upon said car-bid, a housing disposed above said water tank, a pair of tubes extending through said water tank into said housing, a lever carried within said housing, a piston within one of said tubes arranged to engage said lever, and a needle valve within the other of said tubes arranged to control the How of water upon the carbid.
2. An acetylene gas generator comprising a main casing arranged to contain carbid, a water tank disposed above said main casing, means for hermetically securing said water tank to said casing, said water tank being provided with a series of tubes extending through the interior of the tank, a housing carried by said water tank, a piston disposed in one of said tubes and arranged to extend partially into said housing, a spring-pressed at the opposite end of said rod for admitrod disposed Within another of said tubes ting Water from said Water tank lnto 52nd and havlng one end extending into said main casing.
