- KNOW ALL MEN BY THESEy PRESENTS:
i That I, E. L. SPRAGUE, of Leicester, inthe county of Ivoreester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Sheets for Making Hand and other Cards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, s.nd exactdeseriptiono'f the lsaine, reference being had 'te the accompanying drawings, forming a part otl this specification, 'in Which-- Figure 1 represents a hand-card, .the teeth of which are set in a card-sheet made according to my invention.
Figure 2 represents a seetion'of the sheet. on aline with thebends of the teeth. y I
Figures 3 and 4 represent similar sections of a sheet made somewhat didereiitly, but still embracing my invention; and
vFigure 5 represents, upon nn enlarged scale, a seetion' of a Cardi-sheet made like the sheet shown in figs. 1 and 2. l
To. enable those skilled in the art to which myinvention belongs to make nnduse'the same, I will proeeed` to describe it more in detail.
In the 'draw-ings, a hand-card, lettered A, is shown, the teeth a of which are set in acard-sheet made according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section oi' the enrd-sheet shown in fig. 1. It is composed of'three thicknesses of veneers, or leaves of wood, l), and c) glued or cemented together in sucha manner that the grain of the wood in thetwo outer veneers runs 'in thedirection of the bends of the teeth'q, while the grain of the wood ofthe other veneer, c, runs at right angles to the grains ofthe two outer veneers, as'more fully shown and illustrated in fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings, which represents upon an enlarged scale a section'ot`.a card-sheet made acoordihgto the plan shown in g's.- 1 and 2. Modifications nf my invention are shown in iigs.. 3 and'4. These sheets are eoinposedof two strips or veneers of Wood, and one of leather.
By making the card-sheets of veneers of Wood, or partlyot leather, as shown and deseribeththe enrd-sheet can be made much cheaper, while at the same time it gives a) stronger andmore-{irmsupport to the teeth. a. The relative arrangement of the wooden.veneers bb c, :is above described, prevents all splittingr of the Iveneers, either during the'operation oi" setting the teeth or whilethe card is in use.
In some caseslrnanut'aetarers may prefer to have the sheetmade'ot wood and leather, and in which ease one or more veneers may be used and arranged inrespeet fo the leather part or parts` to snit the taste of the manufacturer. TWo Ways of combining the wooden veneersvnith leather have been shown, which are sufficient to illustrate the modified fo'riiis in which my invent-ion' can be earreal out. In fig. 3, the back strip or veneer d is of leather, while in fig. 4 the front strip or veneer e is leather.
Having described my improved card-sheet, what I claim therein as new' and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patient, ism

3. A Gard-sheet made of tivo or more veneers or st-rips of wood, so arranged and glued or cemented together as to .kavel-the grain of the wood ofthe separate veneers cross euch other at'right angles, or neurly so, for
