Description
GEORGE -srNeLnToN, or PATEasoN, NEW JERSEY.
Leiters Patent No. 76,109, dated llfarch 31, 1868.
I IMPROVEMENT IN .SILK-CLEANING KNIFE. i
@ligt Stimuli rrfrrnh in in Hirse tttttrt rtmt mit mrtugpzat nt'tlge sulla.
'LO ALL WIIOVM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SINGLETON, of the city of Paterson, in the county of Passaic, and State 'of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Silk-Knife; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1'is a perspective front view, in elevation, of my improved silk-knife, and
Figure 2 is atop view ofthe same. I I I This invention relates to that class ofinstrunients having coupled flat blades, and known as slkknives, used in the art of spinning; and the improvement consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the stand, holders, and blades, by which the said blades -may be regulated, as regards their respective distance from each other, withgreat precision, to suit any desired size of thread, in .the manner fully described hereafter.
A is the bedplate of my improved silk-knife, provided with holes, a a, for fastening it to the bench or frame where it is to be used. 4
B is a stationary blade-holder, which is fastened to the plate A. by the screw C, and -lrept in its proper place by the stripvD ofv said plate A. i
E is the movable blade-holder, having a foot, F, resting on the plate A7 and fastened thereon vby the screw I'I, passing through an oblong hole, I, in the foot F, so that the blade-holder E can mcve'in/lthe direction ofthe red line x ze', and'is prevented from moving in any directions 'at right angle from said line bythe screw H.
M is a screw, passing through the hole in' the lug L of the plate A without' being screwed therein, and having a lock-nut, I), of ordinary construction. i
K is a lug or heel, fastened to or made all of one piece with. the foot F. The screw M is tapped into the lug K, so that, byturning the said screw M, the movable blade-holder E will be moved inl the direction of the line x an', and, when the screw M is locked by the nut P, it will hold the holder E perfectly motionless.
S and S are the two flat blades, which are fastened to. the holders B and E by the screws'O and O.
e Operation. l
The operation of my improved silk-knife is as follows: The blades being fastened to the holders in such a manner that they willgbe perfectly parallel, having their edges, R R', in contact, thescrew M is turned to the right, causing the head of .said Vscrew M to come to a bearing on the lug Il, and drawing the foot, F, towards the said lug Il. This will cause the blades to bepartedfas the plate A is plane, and the foot, F, titted perfectly on the same; and the edges, AIt R', of the blades S S. are at Aright angles with the plane of the plate A, which becomes the line of motion of the holder E and blade S. Itl follows that, whatever the distance between the plates S S', their edges, It R", will always remain parallel to each other.
When the distance between the blades S S is toogreat, the screw M is turned to the left, and, when the blades S S are properly set, the lock-nut- P'is tightened, which keeps the knives perfectly still.
I know that silk-knives have been made, where the blades are adjustable on stationary holders, by means of slotted holesvin the blades, the blades being adjusted by knocking on their edges, and, when in position, are screwed fast. I know also, that blades have been fastened from a common centre, at one of'. their ends,` which rendered them susceptible of being drawn apart and brought together at their other ends; and, in that last arrangement, the edges of the knives could nevcr'be parallel, causing an irregular gauging of the knives. Neither of these devices or arrangements do I claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
Thevimproved parallcllysacting silk-ltnife, composed of the blade S, holder B, andlplate A, the blade Sl, holder E, foot, F, slotted hole I, screw II, lugs K ane'd L, and screw M, combined and arranged in the manner and so as to operate substantially as set forth.
