(01. 69-13 My present invention relates to skiving tools used in evening shoe sole blanks in which a shoe sole blank passes between drivin rolls against the sharp cutting edge of a skiving blade. More particularly my present invention relates to a novel feature for advancing or withdrawing the skiving blade in a horizontal direction with respect to the driving rolls through which the shoe sole is forced against the blade.
Shoe sole evening or skiving machines are usually designed in combination with shoe sole grading mechanism. The grading mechanism determines the amount of leather that has to be removed from the flesh side of the shoe sole blank and automatically adjusts the skiving driving rolls up or down so that the edge of the shoe sole blank engages the cutting edge of the skiving blade to remove the proper amount of leather required to properly even the blank to the degree required by the trade. For an illustration of equipment of this type reference is had to one of the older machines illustrated in Patent No. 1,130,321, issued to E. P. Nichols March 2, 1915.
Experience has shown that seasonal variations in the condition of the shoe sole blanks make a considerable difference in the operation of skiving mechanism as used in grating and evening machines of the type above referred to. In the middle of the summer when the humidity is high, the soles have a tendency to stick on the skiving rolls. The rubbing of the rolls upon the leading end of the shoe sole blank quickly blackens and disfigures the leather at the top edge. It has been found that this difficulty can be overcome by moving the cutting edge of the blade back a small amount, so that the rolls can obtain a better grip on the shoe sole blank in front of the skiving blade. In the fall when the leather again becomes normal, the skiving blade must be moved back to its former position, or else the cut will not be accurate, and gouging will take place. The adjustment of the skiving blade is extremely important in the skiving ofleather material.
In the past, the evening and'grading machines of the type above referred to, use a thick skiving knife blade which is located by means of two adjustable knife blade stops which extend from the main table around the ends of the efiective portions of the skiving rolls to the line of the knife blade edge. When the knife blade is inserted, the edge is set against the knifeblade stops, and nuts on the clamping bolts located through the table of the machine are tight-.
I H. 2 ened. The knife blade is provided with elongated bolt holes, so that as the knife blade is shortened by regrinding, it can be moved up to keep the cutting edge in proper position.
In the present invention, the skiving knife blade is of the replaceable type made from thin tool steel which when dulled to the point of resharpening is thrown away and a new blade inserted in much the same manner as safety razor blades are used. This thin replaceable skiving blade is held in a special holder. The holder is adjustable on the machine table by means of my new mechanism, as will be described more in detail further along in the specification. This type of skiving knife blade holder is shown in part in copending application Ser. No. 743,896, filed April 25, 1947, in which I am a joint inventor, now Patent No. 2,463,852 granted March 8, 1949.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved adjustment means for adjusting the cutting edge of skiving knife blades with respectto skiving drive rolls in shoe sole blank skiving machines.
Another object is to provide an improved means for horizontally adjusting a holder for replaceable skiving knife blades with respect to shoe sole blank driving rolls.
Other objects and novel features comprising the operation and construction of my invention will be more apparent as the description of the same progresses.

Referring more in detail to the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, 10 indicates a fixed table portion of the machine to which the device is attached, II indicates the skiving rolls between which a leather sole blank I2 is drawn and forced against the cutting edge I3 of a replaceable skivirig kmfe M. A holder for the knife blade I4 is provided and comprises a lower portion I5 and an upper portion I5. Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew is:

Adjustment mechanism for skiving knives comprising,- a skiving member .for splitting sheet material adapted to be secured upon a fixed p0r-- tion of a skivingrmachine, the securing means of said skivingmember comprising a bolt located through said'fixedportion; of said machinaan' ec-' centric head located on the upper end or said belt, a lcount'e'rbored recess located in theupper face of saidskiving member adapted to receive the-eccentric head of said bolt, a' bolt hole located through the said skiving member below the coun terbored area having a diameter concentrically disposed tothediame'ter' of the-said counterboredf recess and of greater diameter than the :body ofsaid bolt, said eccentric head of said boltwbeing' located said counteifbored recess of sa'id sk-iving member, means for tightening said bolt in-said machine;

Adjustment mechanism for skiving knives comprising, a skiving knife holder member composed of an upper and lower portion and an inserted knife blade, the upper and lower holder portions being clamped together against said blade by means of bolts, the said holder member being mounted on a fixed portion of a skiving machine and secured thereto by means of adjustment bolts located through bolt holes located in said machine, the said adjustment bolts having heads eccentrically disposed to the body portion of said bolts, the upper holder portion having a counterbored recess to receive the heads of said adjustment bolts and bolt holes of greater diameter than the body of said bolts located through the lower portion of the upper holder member and the lower holder member and concentric with the counterbore recess in the upper holder member, means for tightening said adjustment bolts against movement in said machine.

Adjustment mechanism for skiving knives comprising, a skiving knife blade holder composed of an upper and lower portion and an in serted knife blade located between said portions adjacent one edge thereof, means for locking said blade and upper and lower portions together in fixed relation to each other, bolt members located through said holder members and a fixed portion of a skiving machine and means for tightening said bolts in said machine against movement, the
heads of said bolts being located in counterbored recesses located in the upper face of said upper holder portion, bolt holes of greater diameter than the body of said bolts located through said holder portions below said counterbored recess concentrically located with respect to said counterbored recess in the upper holder portion, the heads of said bolts being eccentrically disposed to the body portion of said bolts, a recess located in the side of the bolt heads, recesses located in the side of the counterbored recesses, a key screw member threaded in said upper holder portion, said key member having a head portion engaging in the recess in the side of said bolt head and in one of the recesses in the counterbored sides of said counterbored recess in the upper holder portion.
6. In an inserted blade holder for adjusting the position of skiving knives in a skiving machine, an anchor bolt located through said holder and a fixed portion of said machine with means for tightening said bolt in said machine, said bolt having a head eccentrically disposed to the body portion of said bolt, a bolt hole of greater diameter than the body portion of said bolt located through said holder having a counterbored recess for receiving the head of said bolt.
7. In a device as set forth in claim 6 in which the side of the bolt head is recessed and the side of the counterbored recess is provided with a plurality of recesses, a bolt member located in said bolt head recess and one of said recesses in said counterbored recess in said holder, means for securing said bolt to said holder.
