SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,070, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed January 9, 1904- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. HALL, aciti- Zen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the fastening of a railroad-rail to the tie; and its object is to protect the tie from the wear of the rail and also to support and hold firmly the rail and to provide means of raising or elevating a guard-rail.
To these ends my invention consists of a tie-plate having a nose or clip against which the base of the rail may abut, a brace for the head of the rail, a raiser-plate, and certain details of construction.
I hereinafter describe a tie-plate embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the claims, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the various views, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with a wheel of the car indicated on the rail. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views of modifications; Fig. 6, a view of another modification.
In the drawings, 1 and 1 represent railroad I rails.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, 5 is a tie-plate, said tie-plate being formed with teeth or ribs 12 for engaging the tie. Said tie-plate when a brace for the head of the rail is required is bent up, the bent-up portion being indicated in the drawings by the numeral 2, and the said brace is additionally strengthened by the rib or tooth 4 forming part thereof.
3 shows a nose or lug upset from the edge of the tie-plate or downset from the edge of the brace, against which the base of the rail impinges.

15 represents holes for spiking. 1 is a guard-rail. In some cases it is ad vantageous to have this guard-rail 1 pro ect above the main or service rail, or it may beadvisable to use a guard-rail of lesser dimensions or lighter than the main rail. In Figs. 4. and 6 I have shown raiser-plates 6 and 6' applied to my tie-plate.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, clips 13, 14, and 11 show further means for holding the base of the rails, it being understood that said clips 13 and 14 are held in place by bolts 7 and clip 11 by rivets 9 and 10.
l6and 17, respectively, in Figs. 4 and 5 are filling-blocks and bolts for maintaining the guard-rail and main rail in proper relation with each other.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A plate for supporting rails, having teeth or ribs for engaging the tie, and a nose on the edge thereof for the base of the rail.
2. A plate for supporting rails having teeth or ribs for engaging the tie, a brace for the head of the rail, said brace being formed integral with said plate and said teeth or ribs, and a nose for the base of the rail said nose being formed integral with said plate or brace and on the edge thereof.
8. A tie-plate for rails havingaraiser-plate forl one rail provided with a'clip for another ral 4.. A tie-plate for a main rail and a guardrail having a raiser-plate for the guard-rail and a brace for the head thereof.
5. A tie-plate for a main rail and a guardrail having a raiser-plate for the guard-rail, a brace for the head thereof, and a nose for the base thereof.
