UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH JASPER CRANE, OF SUMMERTOIVN, TENNESSEE.
METALLIC CROSS-TIE AND SECURING-PLATE FOR RAILWAY-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,790, dated January 26, 1892.
Application filed November 28, 1890. Serial No. 372,874. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH JASPER CRANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Summertown, in the county of Lawrence and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Cross- Ties and Securing-Plates for Railway-Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic cross ties and securing-plates for railroad-rails.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of devices of the character above set forth, whereby a very strong, durable, and-efficient tie is produced, together with fastening-plates for the rails, whereby the latter are securely held in position and prevented from accidental displace ment.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a section of a railway constructed in accordance with my invention; Figs. 2 and 3, detail views of the lugs.
In the said drawings the referen ce-numeral l designates the base of the crosstie, and is of a sufiicient length to extend across the road-bed, as in the ordinary ties. Projecting upwardly from this base is a rib 2, somewhat shorter than the base l-that is to say,it does not extend quite to the ends thereof.
The numerals 3 designate braces, which are located near the ends of the rib 2, at each side thereof, and extend from the base 1 upwardly, where their upper ends are flush with the top of the rib. Near each end of the rib are formed securing or fastening plates 4:, upon which the rails rest, these plates being so located that their centers where the rails rest are directly over the braces 3. The outer of the bolts 7 and nuts 8.
sides or portions of these plates are provided with lugs 5, which are adapted to fit over the flange of the rail and prevent any outward movement or spreading of the same. The inner portions of these plates have projecting upwardly therefrom posts 5.
The numerals 6 designate removable lugs, which are secured to the fastening-plates so as to embrace the inner flanges of the rails by means of bolts 7'and nuts 8. To retain the lugs 6 in proper alignment I notch the inner ends thereof, as shown at 621:0 receive the posts 5. It will thus be seen that the lugs 6 will be prevented from twisting or turning upon their bolts, due to the jar of the rail, and the rail thereby kept in proper alignment.
The base 1, rib 2, braces 3, plates 4, and lugs 5 are made of cast iron or steel, integral with each other or in one piece.
In using the invention the ties are placed upon the road-bed in the usual manner, and the rails are placed thereon with their outer flanges resting under the lugs 5, the lugs 6 being then applied and bolted down by means The road is then ballasted as usual.
By my invention a very strong tie is produced, which will securely support the rails and render the entire structure very solid and secure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the base, the upwardly-extending rib, the braces near each end of the rib, the securing or fastening plates, and the lugs at the outer ends of said plates, and posts at the inner ends of said plates, all of said parts being fixed to each other, of the removable lugs having notches in their inner ends to receive the said posts, and bolts for clamping said removable lugs to the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OSEPII JASPER CRANE Vitness'es:
