SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,936, dated May 24, 1904. Application filed October 19, 1903- Serial No. 177,638. (NomodeL) To all whom/it may concern.-

Be'it known that I, JAMES W. TATUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the County of Durham and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fan attachments, more especially applicable to rocking-chairs, cradles, cribs, &c.

While generally considered my invention has for its object to promote the comfort of the occupant of the chair, it deals more particularly with the structural characteristics or advantages thereof, which are simplicity, readiness of application, and minimum cost of manufacture.

The nature of my invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims concluding the following specification.

In the accompanying drawings,illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View thereof; and Fig. 2 is a view showing it swung around into a position or plane at right angles to the aforesaid View, as when not in operative position. In the carrying out of my invention I suitably secure, in the first place, to the under side of the rocker-seat a plate or arm 1, having a pendent stud or pivot 1 upon its under side, said arm or plate projecting a short distance therefrom, as shown, the latter having an aperture 1 therein, the purpose of which will be apparent presently. A rod or standard 2, having a lower bent portion 2, has said portion flattened and pivoted in position upon said pivot, as shown, to permit the swinging or moving laterally of said standard with relation to the rocker, as in disposing the same with the other parts of the fan attachment out of the way, as when not in use. A thumb-nut 2 is applied to the pivot or stud aforesaid to effect the holding of the flattened lower portion of the standard upon said pivot. The flattened portion'of said rod or standard has an aperture 2 registering with the aperture 1" in the plate or arm 1 and through which apertures is inserted a pin 3 for holding said rod or standard in operative position, said pin being adapted, for convenience, to be held upon or connected to the latter, it having an eye-ended or looped portion 3 slipped upon said rod. Said rod or standard is also preferably further bent or cranked, as at 2 near its upper end portion, and from this latter projects a pin or pivot 2, upon which is fulcrumed a pendulum 4, having an eye or aperture receiving said pin or pivot, said pendulum comprising, preferably, a rod having fixed to its lower end a weight or sphere, as shown, or otherwise.

A bar or lever 5, adapted in any suitable way, as by boring it longitudinally, to receive the handle of a fan 6, is pivoted, as shown, to the extreme upturned end of the cranked portion 2 of the rod 2 to swing or vibrate horizontally and also has an elongated longitudinal slot 5 to receive and within which plays the upper end of the pendulum-rod for'actuating said bar with the fan, as when the occupant of the rocker or chair operates or rocks the latter, as will be readily appreciated. A screwthreaded or other pin 7 may be inserted through a lateral aperture intercepting the fan-handle-receiving bore in said bar 5 to aid in holding the handle of the fan in place in said bar.

It will thus be seen that, as above intimated, as the occupant of the rocker or chair actuates or rocks the chair the pendulum or weighted rod 4 will naturally be actuated or oscillated upon its fulcrum, consequently throwing or vibrating the bar 5 back and forth, accordingly actuating the fan 6, said rod playing through the slot 5 of said bar 5, thus securing the requisite fanning action.

It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed as suggested without departing from the spirit of my invention and said invention still be protected.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fan attachment comprising a standard adapted to be applied to means for obtaining a rocking action, a longitudinally-slotted fancarrying bar or lever pivotally mounted upon said standard to move or swing, with the fan, horizontally in an arc, and a pendulum or weighted lever fulcrumed upon said standard to swing vertically and in a plane at right angles to that in which swings said fan-carrying bar, and having its upper end engaging or playing in the slot of said horizontally-movable member.

2. A fan attachment embracing a bracket or arm outstanding from means for securing a rocking action, a rod or standard having a lower bent or angled end portion adapted to be secured under said arm or bracket, a pin or fastening effecting connection between said angled end portion and arm, a slotted fan-carrying bar pivoted upon said standard, and a pendulum rod or bar fulcrumed upon a pivot of said standard and having its upper end or arm playing in the slot of said fan-carrying bar.

3. A fan attachment comprising a standard or rod having a lower bent or angled end portion, means for eflecting connection between the same and means for securing a rocking action, said standard or rod having an upper cranked portion, with an upper end vertical terminal, a slotted fan-carrying bar or lever pivoted upon said terminal, and a pivoted weighted rod or pendulum fulcrumed upon a lateral pivot or pin outstanding from said standard, said pendulum or rod having its upper end playing in the slot of said fan-carrying bar or lever.
