FRED F. RICHEY, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO FRED F. RIOHEY AND \VILLIAM BITTMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING THE BEAT OF CLOCK-PENDULUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,234, dated December 10, 1895.
Serial No. 542,014. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED F. RIOHEY, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Leveling Attachment for Clocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a leveling attachment for clocks, and it has for its object to provide a device adapted for attachment to a clock mechanism, which attachment will control the pendulum and verge of the clock to such an extent that it will act properly even though the clock should be considerably out of plumb; and a further object of the invention is to make an attachment for the purpose above described which will be exceedingly simple, durable and economic.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of aportion of a clock mechanism and the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the said attachment applied to the clock; and Fig. is a sectional view of a pivot-support for a balance-frame, constituting the main feature of the invention.
In carrying out the invention the clock mechanism A may be of any desired construction, and the verge-wheel shaft 10, which is shown in the drawings, is journaled in the frame of the clock mechanism at the back and in a bracket 11 projected from the frame at the front; and the bearing, whether it be the bracket 11 or the back of the said frame, is preferably constructed as shown in Fig. 3, in which it is formed with a boss 12, the said boss having a stud 13 attached thereto and integral therewith, and extending horizontally outward. The upper ends of the members of a U-frame B are pivoted on the said studs 13, and are held in position on the studs by means of set-screws 14C or a similar device.
The U frame B has one of its vertical members at the front center, and the other at practically the rear center of the clock mechanism, and the front member of the U-frame is curved to a greater or less extent to the right from the center, as shown in Fig. 2, being at all times in front of the verge-rod, while the rear memberis more or less straight. The U -frame at a point at the rear of the center of its bow member is provided with apendent member B, upon which a weight B is suspended, which will balance the said U- frame and keep the rear member plumb no matter how much out of plumb the clock mechanism may sit. A block or bar 15 is pivoted upon the inner face of the front member of the weighted U-frame, and in the bottom portion of this block or bar 15 the spindle 16 of the verge 17 is journaled at one of its ends, the opposite end being held in the usual spring 18. Thus it will be observed that the verge is carried by the weighted swinging frame B, and the pendulunrrod 19 at its upper end, after having passed through the verge, is secured in the usual manner to a post 20, which is also secured to the back of the forward member of the said weighted frame. Thus it will be observed that both the pendulum and the verge will be kept perfectly plumb by reason of the weighted frame B being constantly in that position irrespective of the frame carrying the clock mechanism proper.
The device is exceedingly simple, durable and economic, and is applicable to any form of clock mechanism. The usual verge-wheel 22 is provided for engagement with the verge, and it will be further observed that the swinging frame will control the verge and pendulum to such an extent that the frame of the clock mechanism A may be considerably out of plumb, provided the pendulum and verge in their swinging movement are not brought in contact with any offsets on the frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a leveling attachment for clocks, the combination of a frame, a verge wheel and its shaft journaled therein, bearings formed on said frame and projecting therefrom in axial alignment with and at opposite ends of frame, said pendulum extending below the IO said U-shaped frame and to one side of the bent arm of the same, substantially as set forth.
FRED F. RIGHEY.
