PENDULUM-REGULATOR FOR CLOCK S.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,249, dated April 1, 1884.

To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SoLoN M. TERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pendulum-Regulators for Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of pendulum-regulators for clocks which adjust the same from the upper end of the rod, instead of adjusting the ball upon the rod; and the objects of my improvements are to produce a simple and nice adjustment, and one that can be produced at a small cost. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my regulator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified construction of the same.
I have herein illustrated only the front plate of the clock-movement, as my regulator may be applied to any ordinary clock-movement.
A designates the said front plate of the clock-movement, upon which the fixed stud a, Fig. 2, is applied, and to which stud the ordinarypendulum-rod, b, is secured. Just above said stud I form a bridge, 0, Fig. 2, which, in connection with the front plate, serves to journal the cam-shaft d. The outer end of this is squared for the application of the key, by means of which said shaft may be rotated in either direction. Upon said shaft, and rigidly connected thereto, is the cam B, containing the scroll or snail groove 6, Fig. 1. Mounted so as to slide in suitable bearings upon the front of the bridge 0 is the vertically-adjustable slide G, the same having a slit arm, f, Fig. 2, which embraces the fiat sides of the spring or thinned portion of the pendulum-rod b. This slide is also provided with a pin or projection, g, which rests in the snail-groove e of the cam B. By turning the cam-shaft d, the slide 0 can be either raised or lowered to carry the arm f farther up or down upon the pendulum-rod, the parts being so mounted that the friction thereof will hold the cam B in whatsoever position it may be placed. To lower the arm f has the effect of shortening the pendulum-rod, or vice versa. In Fig.3 the same result is produced by a slightly different construction. The stud a, to which the pendulum-rod is secured, is connected to the slide 0, instead of to the front plate, and the stud is extended forward so that the front end, 9, enters the small groove e, and performs the function of the pin 9 in the other figures.
Instead of the'slit arm f, I employ a slit stud, f, and secure the same to thefront plate. The operation of this device has the effect of shortening or lengthening the pendulum-rod;
but in so doing it raises or lowers the rod itself, which is not the case with the construction first described.
I am aware that regulators for pendulums have been heretofore made which raised and lowered a slit arm in connection with a fixed pendulum-rod, and others which raised and lowered the pendulum-rod in connection with a slit arm which was stationaril y affixed. Both of these constructions are hereby disclaimed.
I am also aware that a prior patent shows a vertically-moving slide connected directly to the pendulum, a slit post on the frame through which the flattened part of the pendulum-rod passes, and a cam connected with the clockmovement and revolved thereby for automatically moving the slide, and I hereby disclaim the same.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the slit arm, the movement-plate A, the bridge a, mounted on said plate, the slide 0, the cam B, and camshaft d, disconnected from the clock-train, said slide and shaft both mounted upon the said bridge, and the shaft having its front end provided with means for rotating it by hand,
substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of plate A, the pendulum b, mounted on a fixed stud, (1, attached to said plate, the bridge 0, the slide 0, having the slit arm f, the cam B, and the cam-shaft d for operating said slide and split arm, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
