MPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
@the .tlphulr referat tu in time Enters. ttmt mit mating mi nf the smut.
TO -ALL WHOMI IT CON CERN Beit'knewn' that I, JOHN MAGEE, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk, and State of- Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the-following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which I Figure 1 is a plan of the upper side of a'lamp-hurner, with my improvements applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an elevation 'of the same.
Figures 3 and 4 are elevations of two p'ortions of the burner detached.
Figure 5 is a'section on the line :c w of ignQ.
The Vobject of" myinvention i's to provide a chimney-support or holder, which, together with the chimney Y secured thereonpmay be readily removed'at all times fromthe lamp without fear of burning the fingers, and
my invention consists in-a burner provided with a stationary cone, over the top of which, and a langeor guide atits base, a perforated chimneyhelderlmay be instantly fitted, without requiring any care in adjusting it thereon. Y A
To enable othersskilled in thc art to understand and use my invention, `Iu'ill proceed to describe the manner in which I lhave carried it out. A, v
In the said drawings, Arepresents the burner, the base of which is provided in the ordinary manner with a screw-thread, a, which :tits-into the screw-cap. of the lamp. Secured to or forming a part of the burner, `A, is astationary cone, B, (Hg. 3,) into which and through thev bottom of the burner passes a central Wick-tube, C. At thc base ofi the stationary cone is formed a circular flange, l), of' a diameterllarger than the 'upper portion or body c of the cone, andlof the same diameter as the under side of the burner, which is provided with perfo- Vrations el, through' which a current ot` air is admitted to `the`chambcr D, formed between the outside of Vthe wick-tube and inside ofthe cone, for insuring perfect-combustion.
yE` is a, chimney-support, or holder, ofl the form'seen'inl fig. 4, the upper portion of which is provided with a circular opening', to allow of its being: readily iitted upon the outside of the upper portion of the cone, the
surfaceof the parts in contact being slightly conical, and .carefully made to lit eachother snugly.) The 'lower .portion of ythe chimney-holderE consists of a Wide, circular Vperforated band, e, which exactly lits over the outer edgey of the circular ange at the Abase of the cone, by which construction the holder may not only be instantly guided .overthc top ofvthe cone, but may be pressed vdown snugly over the flange b at its base, soA as to be securely heldin place thereon, the cenicalvsurfaces of the upper part of the coneand holder, when in contact, causing suilicient friction to Wedge't'hem together. I
The. cone is provided with twov apertures ff through its Side, the two apertures being diametrically opposite, asv shown in g. 5. Between the perforated band e and the corre'` B is formed a chamber, in which circulates va. current of air, which is admitted .through the perforations inthe band e, (thereby cooling it,.) and passes lthrough the apertures ff in the conc, whereit unites with'the current passingup through the pcrforations al, .in thcbottom of the burner, thus creating a draught as required.
lMy improved chimney-holder is adapted to recive most of the 'ordinary forms and sizes of chimneys new Ain use. i
It willb'e seen that the employmentof a burner, constructed as above described, admits ofthe holder, with the chimney thereon, being instantly removed, immediately after the flame is extinguished, or when the Wickl is lighted, as the perforated hand is constantly'kept quite coolby-the current of air .passing through it from the outside', and the holder may be grasped bythe fingers without fear of burning. The holder and` chimney may also bereplaced in a convenient and expeditious manner, without requiring to be turned around tofany particular position, theconstruction of thestationary cone, in connection with that of the opening in the top ofthe holder, being. euchI as 'to cause the holder to be'centred at all times as soonas they are brought together. u
, What I claim `as my invention, `and desirehto secure by Letters Patent, is
A stationary cone, B, in combination with a perforated 'chimney-holder, E, all constructed and arranged substantiall;v as and for the purpose set forth.- l Y JOHN MAGEE.
