FRANK R. NICE, oF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
v IUBER-'DAM lHOLDER AND GUTTER.
SPECIFICATION Vforming part of Letters Patent No. 760,800, dated May 24, 41904.
Application filed September 12, 1903. Serial No. 173,011. (No model.) I
fo @ZZ whom if may concern/.n
'Be it known that I, lFRANK R. NICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Inghamand State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rubber-Dam Holders and Cutters, -of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rubber-dam hold er Aand cutter; and the primary object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device for holding a roll of rubber dam and a knife attachment whereby the rubber can'bve cut any length desired in a straight and regular manner.
The invention consists, primarily, of a base with a cylinder supported at one end thereof, one end of the cylinder being removable for the ready insertion of a roll of rubber dam and said cylinder also having a slot therein whereby the dam may be drawn therefrom and a holding .device with which a rotatable cutter operates to separate the dam in lengths required.
While the improved device is particularly adapted for use in separating or cutting rubber dam into suitable lengths, it will be undei-stood that it may be employed for other purposes-as, for instance, in separating paper or other material. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a rubber-dam holder and cutter embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical-section taken through the plane of the clamp or the retaining means for the dam or other material adapted to be cut by the improved device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section ofthe improved device. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the cutter, showing the parts with which it cooperates in dotted lines.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views. Y
The numeral 1 designates a bed or base of suitable material having thereon a resistingsheathing 2 of some suitable metal, preferably zinc. At one end of the-base are a pair of uprights 3, supporting a cylinder 4, having one end removable and a slot or feed- Opening 5 in the lower portion thereof. The
zincjsheathing or covering 2 is of limited Aextent respectingits width and is located in ladvance of the cylinder 4, said sheathing or covering being countersunk in the bed 1, 'so that the upper surface thereof willA be flush with the similar surface ofthe bed. This sheathing has a pressure member or clamp 6 hinged'to one end thereof and provided with an upperv guide 7 which is partially cylindrical and also includes a vertical web 8, which projects downwardly into the main body of the clamp. Freely movable on the guide 7 is a head 9, having a circular aperture 10 extending therethrough to engage the cylindrical portion of the guide and aslot 1.1 opening out through the bottom thereof to permit the lower part of the head to embrace the web `8, so as to keep the head as an entirety in close engagement with the guide to prevent irregular or wabblin g movement thereof. The head 9 has a cutting-disk 12 rotatably held on the side thereof opposite the side contiguous to the cylinder 4, the parts being so proportioned and arranged that the cutting-disk 12 will firmly bear` against the edge of the clamp or holding device 6 opposed to the edge of such device nearest the cylinder. The disk 12 is movable in contact with the metallic sheathing or covering 2 and is of harder metal than the latter, so that the cutting edge thereof -will not be injured by contact withgthe sheathing. -As a matter'of convenience in' raising and lowering the clamp projections i123 are provided at opposite ends of the latter and the head 9 is so shaped, as at 14, that it may be conveniently engaged by the fingers of the hand of the operator.
In the use of the improved dam holder and cutter the rubber dam is pulled outwardly from the cylinder 4 over the upper surface of the bed 1 after the clamp 6 has been elevated or thrown over 'to one side. The length of the dam desired' having been determined, the clamp 6 is thrown downward in a horizontal position and held with one hand in'close contact with the dam, while the opposite hand'of the operator is used in moving the head 9and its 'cutting-disk over the dam and severing the length of the latter desired.
As before indicated, the improved device TOO may be used for other means or for cutting other materials, but is especially adapted for cutting rubber dams into suitable lengths. In some instances the cutter may be employed for forming an opening in an intermediate portion of the dam When required for certain operations, and for different kinds of Work it is proposed to modify the dimensions and proportions and minor details of construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. In a device of the class set forth, the combination ofa base, a tubular holding means at one end of the base, a clamping device hinged at one end on the base in advance of the holding means, and a slidable head carried by the clamping device and having a ro' tating cutter thereon.
2. In a device of the class set forth, the combination ofa base, a tubular holding means at one end of the base, a clamping device hinged t0 the base and adapted to be disposed transversely over the latter, the said clamping device having a metal guide, a head movable on the guide, and a rotatable disk cutter carried by the head and operative close to one edge of the clamping device.
3. In a device ot' the class set forth, the
combination of a base, a tubular holding means at one end of the base, a clamp movably attached to the base and adapted to be disposed transversely over the latter, a metal covering on which the clamping device is adapted to rest, and aslidable cutter carried by the clamping device and normally having Contact with the metal covering.
4. In a device of the class set forth, the combination of a base, a tubular holding means located at one end of the base, aclalnping device movably attached to the base, and a slidable cutter carried by the clamping device and adapted to contact with a portion of the base.
5. In a device of the class set forth, the combination of a base, a tubular holding means located at one end of the base, a clamping device movably attached to the base, and a rotatable cutter carried by the clamping device and adapted to contact with a portion of the base, Said cutter being movable transversely over the hase.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK R. NICE.
