Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFIE. JAMES E. ELLIS, or PLYMOUTH, INDIANA.
CIGAR-CUTTER.
No. 846,650. specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 19,1906. Serial No. 348.579.
Patented March 12, 1907.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plym- I outh, in the county of Marshall and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useg ful Improvements in Cigar-Cutters and I do i hereby declare that the Iollowingis aull, clear, and exact description of the Same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making i a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of' reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and eifective device for trimming the tuck ends of cigars and in which a reversible two-edged cutting-blade is operated by a spring-actuated plunger to give a Shear cut to the tobacco, the blade having a vertical movement by means of a guide-Standard.
The invention consists ot a cigar-cutting device constructed sut Stantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a cigar-cutting device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an elevation, partly in section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 oi' Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bed or base, having a Sernicircular trough a to receive and hold the cigar while being trimmed, Said trough having a longi.- tudinal slot b, which extends through the bed or base. Through the Slot b extends a suitable bolt c, (shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1,) I Said bolt having a nut d engaging the screwthreads upon the lower end of the bolt and a gage B upon the upper end of the bolt, thus providing a Simple and eiective guide, which 1s adjustable through the medium ofthe bolt and nut.
Any suitable adjustable guide may be used in place of the guide shown and any means provided i' or rendering it adjustable.
The bed or base A, which may be of wood or other suitable material, is provided with a Scale C to determine the length of the cigar.
A guide-standard D is adjustably connected to one end of the bed or hase B by means of a set-screw e, extending through a slot f in the standard, so as to bring the throat g thereof at the required distance above the trough a, and any Suitable means may be employed for rendering the standard vertically adjustable, aS found ,most convenient, the tuck end of the cigar resting on the throat the required distance forward to receive the edge of the cutting-knife. The standard D has a vertical guide-slot h, in which a guide-block i works, and to this guide-block is secured by screwsy` the reversible two-edge blade E, which gives a shear cut as the knife is forced down against the end of the cigar.
The knife is operated through the medium of a suitable plunger F, which is spring-actuated by the coiled spring c, or any suitable means may be employed for rendering the l plunger spring-actuated, that shown being considered the most Simple and practical. The plunger F is connected to the knife or blade Fl by the same screws y' that connect the blade to the guide-block i, so that the blade, guide-block, and plunger will te actuated Sirnultaneously, the uide-block fitting in the guide-slot 7L to gui e the blade in its movement.
The standard D has a mortise-guide Z, in which works the plunger F, and the upper end oi the Standard has a guide-flange m, through which the plunger passes, the standard also having a scraper n.
A iinger-guard G is secured to the base A j infront of the lower portion of the plunger to prevent injury to the fingers while the same is in operation.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A cigar-cutter comprising a Suitable base with trough in which the cigar is placed, a slotted standard having a throat to receive the tuck end of the cigar, a vertically-movable blade, a guide-block secured thereto and engaging the Slot in the standard, means for operating the blade, and means for vertically adjusting the standard to regulate the position of the throat thereof with relation to the trough, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. Aoigar-outter comprising asuitablebed l ger-guard upon the bed or base, substanor base with trough thereon, a vertically-adtially as and for the purpose described. zo justable standard upon the end of the bed or In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature base and having a Vertioal guide-slot, a outin presence of two Witnesses. ting-blade, a guide-block to which the blade JAMES E. ELLIS. is connected and engaging the guide-slot, a Witnesses: mortised guide, and a spring-actuated plun- REA W. ANDERSCN ger engaging the mortised guide, and a 'nl HANEY WERMAN.
