To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN R. VVILsoN, a citizen of the United States,rcsiding at McDowell, in the county of McDowell and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and useful l-larness Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an attachment to be used in connection with a set of harness for the purpose of preventing the harness being rapidly worn out by contacting with rough surfaces.

In coal-mines it is practical to haul the coalcars by mules, and the harness frequently comes in contact with the roof of the mine, and consequently is rapidly worn, and it is with the idea of avoiding this rapid wearing of the harness that the present attachment has been designed; and with this object in View the invention consists, essentially, of a leather pad adapted to be arranged above the ordinary harness-saddle, said pad having straps connected therewith, said straps being connected to the leather pad by means of metal clips, which metal clips come in contact with the roughened surface, and thereby prevent the leather portions ofthe harness and attachment being worn.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a harness attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. Bis a top plan view of the pad, together with the metal fastening devices for connecting the straps thereto; and Figs. 3 and 4 show details of construction.

In constructingaharness attachment in accordance with my invention I employ a leather pad A, which is adapted to be arranged upon the ordinary harness-saddle and is of such size and shape as to completely cover the same. This pad A has a metal strap B, secured centrally to the top thereof, said strap being bent back upon itself, as shown at B", for the purpose of connecting the links G to the top of the pad, the ends of the strap being brought close together and securely riveted to the pad by means of rivets B Front straps I) are connected to the links O by means of metallic clipplates E, and the rear straps F are connected to said links by means of the metallic clip-plates G, and girth-straps H are connected to said links by means of the clip-plates I, said clip'plates being securely fastened to the ends of the straps by means of rivets K. The free ends of the straps are also provided with buckles or any other suit able means for connecting them to the harness proper.

It will thus be seen that I provide a simple attachment which is arranged directly upon the ordinary harness and will protect said harness from coming in contact with the top of the mine, and inasmuch as those portions of the attachment which come in contact with the mine are metal it is obvious that this at tachment will greatly prolong the life of an ordinary set of harness used in a mine.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 A device of the kind described comprising an elongated, flat, leather pad, rectangular links, a metal strap bent upon itself and connecting said links, said strap being secured. midway the links to the longitudinal center of the pad, and a plurality of securing-straps connected toeach link.
