RIBBON-SHIELD FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,371, dated May 17, 1904. Application filed October 30, 1903. Serial No. 179,230- (No model.)

Be it known that I, VVAL'rm: (l. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ribbon-Shields for Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a removable shield for the exposed portion of the ink-ribbon in a type-writing machine; and it consists in an improved removable shield constructed and applied substantially as herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top View of the ribbon-plate as heretofore employed on the Remington typewriting machine. Fig. 2 represents the same provided with my improved removable shield for the ribbon. Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a top-view of the shield removed from the ribbon-plate. Fig. 5 represents a side edge view of the same. Fig. 6 represents a rear edge view. Fig. 7 represents an under side View. Fig. 8 represents the top View of a ribbon-plate as used on the Smith-Premier type-writing machine. Fig. 9 represents a top View of the same with my improved ribbon-shield attached thereto.

I claim as my invention The combination with the ribbon-plate of a type-writing machine, of the removable ribbon-shield provided with the engaging ears adapted for sliding engagement with the 0pposite edges of the ribbon-plate, to cover the 60 exposed portion of the ink-ribbon, substantially as described.
