WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,067, dated May 1'7, 1904.
Application filed September 11. 1903. Serial No. 172,730. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HOTTMAN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to a machine for washing clothes; and it consists, briefly, of a closed cylinder in which is mounted a circular frame to receive the clothes, in a mechanism for slowly revolving the frame and simultaneously imparting to it a reciprocating or shaking motion.
My invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of the machine; Fig. 2, an end view partially broken away; Fig. 3, a plan view; Fig. 4, a plan view of a circular frame which is inclosed within the casing of the machine; Fig. 5, a vertical section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the reference-letters of the drawings, A represents the cylindrical casing of the machine, which is provided with a door A and which is supported upon a suitable base A The casing A is provided with elongated side opening a to receive a shaft B, upon which is mounted a cylindrical frame B, the periphery of which is formed of a number of parallel slats 6, between which are openings and upon which is placed a door B for the insertion and removal of the clothes. The shaft B is suspended by arms 0 C, which embrace and are supported by a shaft (J mounted in bearings c 0, secured to the top of ,the casing A. The shaft C is provided at one end with a driving-pulley C and at the 0pposite end with a pinion C", which meshes with a gear-wheel C", mounted upon and adapted to rotate the shaft B. A reciprocationg motion is imparted to the shaft B and to the cylindrical frame B, which is carried by means of a shaft D. This shaft is guided in bearings (Z (Z and is provided, respectively, with fast and loose pulleys D and D It is also provided with eccentrics D D, which turn in arms D D", and these being connected to the shaft B impart to it and to the cylindrical frame B a reciprocating or swinging motion.
The casing A is supplied with water by means of a pipe E, and when desired the wa ter contained in the casing may be withdrawn through a cock E.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A washing-machine, comprising a cylindrical casing, a cylindrical frame mounted within the casing, means for turning said frame, and means to cause the frame to reciprocate as it is being turned, substantially as specified.
2. A washing-machine, comprising a cylindrical casing, a cylindrical frame mounted therein having its periphery formed of a circular series of slats, means to impart a rotary motion to said frame and means to impart a swinging motion to the frame, substantially as specified.
3. A washing-machine, comprising a cylindrical casing, a cylindrical frame mounted therein and having a slotted wall, a mechanism adapted to impart a swinging motion to said frame, and a mechanism for revolving the frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. HOTTMAN.
