PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREWV FORBES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRAPPER FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,602, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed February 16, 1904. Serial No. 193,857. (No model.)
To (Ll/1 whom, 71/ In/Ly concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW FORBES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrappers for Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to package-wrappers, and more particularly to wrappers for bottles.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrapper a portion of which will constitute a label gummed for attachment to the bottle,
so that when the wrapper is removed the label portion will adhere to the bottle to serve the purpose of the ordinary label.
The construction of my improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the invention, showing the outer side of the wrapper; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the inner surface of the wrapper. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner side of the wrapper, illustrating the manner of applying the same to a bottle. Fig. 4: is a view in perspective of a completed package, showing a bottle inclosed within the wrapper; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a bottle with label attached as it appears after the wrapper has been removed.
The reference numeral 1 designates the wrapper, which is of rectangular shape and preferably of paper, l'iaving its side edges 2 upturned by creasing to facilitate the forma tion of a neat and compact package.
Adjacent to one end of the wrapper is printed a label 3, designed to serve as the permanent label for the bottle to be inclosed within the wrapper. This label is printed or impressed upon the outer surface of the wrapper and is surrounded or inclosed by a continuous weakened break-linea of perforations or similar means, thus rendering the label portion of the wrapper readily separable from the remainder thereof.
The inner surface 5 of the label portion of the wrapper is gummed, as shown in Fig. 2,
so that that portion of the wrapper will adhere to the bottle when the latter is wrapped up, as will be again referred to hereinafter.
The outer surface of the wrapper adjacent to the end opposite to that hearing the label 3 may bear any desired or appropriate advertising matter, as indicated at 6, to provide a label or designation for the wrapped package, which will be either printed upon or attached to the Wrapper to be removable there with.
The inner edge of the wrapper on the end opposite the portion bearing the label 3 is gummed, as indicated in the drawings, to firmly hold the package in wrapped condition.
The utility of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated from the illustrations in the drawings in connection with the foregoing description. A bottle designated by the numeral 7 is laid upon the wrapper with one of its sides resting upon the gummedsurface 5 of the wrapper, said gummed surface having been previously dampened to insure the adhesion of the label to the bottle. The bottle is then rolled up and inclosed within the wrapper to form the compact roll illustrated in Fig. 4 with the outer label in View.
I preferably employ a packing or lining 8, of corrugated paper or pasteboard, as shown in Fig. 3, between the bottle and wrapper to guard against breakage.
It will be obvious that after the wrapper is unrolled and torn away from the bottle the gummed portion thereof will adhere to the bottle, serving as a permanent label for the latter, and thus avoiding the labor and expense of the application of the ordinary label. (See Fig. 5.)
It will be apparent that the invention is not restricted to the rectangular outline of perforations shown in the drawings, as labels of circular, oval, or other forms may be used, as desired, and I would have it understood that I reserve the right to make all such Variations and modifications in the details of the invention as may fall within the scope and purview of the following claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A package-Wrapper having a portion thereof within the borders of the wrapper proper gummed for adhesion to the article to be wrapped and constituting a label separable from the remainder of the Wrapper by a weakened break-line, whereby the ungummed portion of the wrapper may be readily removed from the article wrapped, leaving affixed to said article as a permanent label the gummed portion of said Wrapper.
2. A package-Wrapper having a label printed thereon Within the borders of the wrapper proper, the inner surface of the wrapper beneath said label-being gummed, and a weakened break-line outlining said label, whereby the ungummed portion of the wrapper may be readily removed from the package wrapped leaving afiixed to said package as a permanent label the gummed portion of said Wrapper; said Wrapper also bearing a supplemental or outer label removable With the Wrappers.
3. A merchandise package comprising a wrapper, aportion of which within the borders of the Wrapper proper is gummed on its inner surface and printed on its outer surface, and a packing interposed between the package and Wrapper; said printed portion made separable from the remainder of the wrapper by weakened break-lines; whereby the ungummed portion of the wrapper may be readily removed from the package leaving aflixed thereto the printed portion of said Wrapper.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ANDREW FORBES.
