Description

United States Patent Ofilice 3,207,418 Patented Sept. 21, 1965 3,207,418 STRING-BAG, PAPER-BAG OR THE LIKE AND A METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING SUH BAGS Erik 0. Kramming, Saltsjobaden, Sweden, assignor to AB Herman Steuberg, a Swedish joint-stock company Filed Apr. 14, 1964, Ser. No. 359,720 Claims priority, application Sweden, Apr. 16, 1963, 4,155/ 63 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-54) Shopping-bags are in many cases provided with advertising text printed on the outside of the bags. The subject matter of such advertising usually comprises the name of the firm or of the goods, trademarks in the form of pictures or the like, eye-catching picture or textual material. It was, however, found to be of no use to provide the outside of such bags with text information printed in small type, because people usually do not give close attention to what is written on the outside of such bags. Shopping or string-bags and the like, furthermore, offered advertising opportunity by placing loose advertising slips into the bags. Such slips, however, remain in many cases undiscovered on the bottom of the bag.
This invention has as its object to produce a paper-bag or the like which comprises an arrangement for advertising or the like, which advertising may be of the same type as printed, for example, on advertising slips and the like. The invention shall, however, eliminate the said disadvantages of advertising slips placed loose in the bag. A further object is to make the advertising easily accessible and easy to separate from the bag proper.
For achieving the aforesaid objects, according to the invention a bag of paper or the like is produced which is characterized by an advertising slip arranged for advertising purposes within the bag, in such a manner, that the slip is fastened easily detachable near the upper edge of the bag and extends to the bottom of the bag.
The invention will be described in greater detail in the following, reference being had to the accompanying drawing showing by way of example an embodiment of a bag according to the invention, wherein FIGS. 1 and 2 show two sections through the bag in unfolded state extending perpendicularly relative one another.
The bag 1 shown on the drawing is provided with handles 2 which are fastened in conventional manner to the bag portion proper by holding patches 3. A slot 4 of approximate U-shape forms a tongue 5 to which an advertising slip in the form of a strip 6 is fastened by gluing. The lower portion 7 of said strip 6 was during the manufacture secured by gluing to the bottom 8 of the bag. Due to the perforation 9, however, the strip portion which forms the advertising slip proper, can be easily separated from said portion 7, so that upon tearing off the tongue 5 the advertising slip follows with said tongue and is easily removed from the bag.
The bag 1 was manufactured in such a manner, that a first web of paper or the like which forms the bags was advanced together with a second web which forms advertising slips. The second web was attached to the first web in that it was glued in the bottom 8 of the bag 1 when said bottom was folded and glued, and by gluing the second web to the tongues 5. Hereby, the separation of the second web occurred in connection with the separation of the bag proper from the first web, and at the same time the said perforation 9 was made.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment shown, but may be varied within the scope of the following claims. The bag proper, for example, may be designed in many different ways. The invention, furthermore, may also be applied to cardboard boxes, for example, when it is desired to provide them with advertising of the aforesaid type. It is, further, not always necessary to secure the advertising slips to the lower edge. The slot 4 is normally formed only in the bag proper, but may .also extend through the advertising slip, thus facilitating the punching of said slip. Even other modifications of the invention subject matter can, of course, be imagined.
What I claim is:
1. In a shopping bag or the like, an advertising or information strip, means fixing said strip to said bag adjacent the top thereof, said strip extending downwardly along the inner side of said bag and means also fixing said strip to the bottom of said bag, said strip being perforated adjacent its lower edge whereby it can be readily partially removed from said bag for visual examination, said strip being attached to said bag at said top and bottom only.
2. In a shopping bag or the like, a tongue formed in said bag adjacent the upper edge of one side thereof, said tongue being formed by providing a generally U-shaped slit in said one side, an advertising and information strip fixed to said tongue and extending downwardly along the inner surface of said one side, means fixing the lower edge of said strip to the bottom of said bag adjacent said one side and perforations extending transversely of said strip adjacent the bag bottom whereby said tongue may be removed from said bag and said strip torn along the said line of perforations to present the information on said strip to view.
