NEWS-STAND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,311, dated May 10,1904.

Be it known that I, STErIIEN J. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in News-Stands, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in stands for use by newsdealers, the object being to provide a device for holding' and containing newspapers or periodicals in such way that they may be conveniently inserted and withdrawn therefrom and also to provide a seat or rest for the dealer which when not in use may be conveniently folded against or into the stand proper.

With these and other ends 'in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved stand, the seat being' shown in its folded adjustment. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof, the seat being' shown in its lowered adjustment. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on theline 3 3 of Eig. l.

Referring to the drawings, 4 5 6 7 represent four upright or vertical posts, to which is secured near the bottom thereof the shelf or platform 8 and near the upper ends thereof the shelf or platform 9 and about midway between the upper and lower shelves the shelf 10. To the posts 4 5 is also secured the bulletin-board 11, extending a short distance above the platform 9 and a short distance below the platform 10, a similar bulletin-board 12 being also secured to the posts 6 7, upon which boards may be painted advertising matter of any kind or upon which may be secured printed posters or bulletins. To the upper ends of the posts 5 6 is secured the board 13, the upper edge thereof lying' flush with the upper edges of the bulletin-boards 11 12 andthe lower edge of which rests against the shelf or platform 9, a similar board 14 being also secured to the posts 4 7, whereby there is formed a receptacle in the upper end of the stand, the sides of which consist of the upper ends of the bulletin-boards 11 12 and the boards 13 14 and the base or bottom of which is formed by the shelf or platform 9, this receptacle being' intended to hold and contain the newspapers or periodicals 15.

The second or middle compartment, formed of the base or bottom 10, the top 9, and sides 11 12, has two of its sides open, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and is designed to contain newspapers or periodicals, from which stock, if desired, the upper receptacle may be replenished from time to time, or, if desired, in the middle compartment, as well as upon the lower shelf 8, may be papers or periodicals different from those contained in the upper receptacle, all being within easy and convenient reach of the newsdealer.

To one side of the stand and adjacent to the bulletin-board is secured a seat consisting of the seat proper, 16, hinged to the cross-piece 17 secured to two of the vertical posts 5 6, and to the under side of which scat and near its outer edge is hinged the upper end of the support 18, the lower end adapted to rest upon the ground and retain the seat proper, 16, in a horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, a jointed rod 19 being' pivoted to the seat 16 and support 18 to retain said seat and support in their lowered adjustments, said seat 16 being of such a height that it will allow the newsdealer when sitting thereon to conveniently reach the papers or publications contained in the upper receptacle. Vhen not in use, the seat 16 is folded up against the side of the stand and the support 18 folded against the under side of the seat 16, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, in order that the stand may occupy but little room when not in use and be conveniently carried or moved from place to place by means of the handle 20, secured to the base or bottom 9 of the upper receptacle.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A news-stand of the character described,

consisting of Jfour upright posts having secured thereto several shelves, one above the other, each forming the bottom of a compartment, bulletin-boards secured to said posts and forming two sides of the upper and middle compartments, the two remaining sides of the upper compartment beingclosed and the two remaining sides of the middle compartment being left open, substantially as described.

2. A news-stand of the character described, consisting of four upright posts having secured to the same several shelves, one above the other, bulletin-boards secured to said posts and forming two sides, of several compartments, the upper compartment having all of its sides closed with the exception of the top, and a folding seat secured to one side of the stand adjacent to the bulletin-boards, substantially as described.

3. A news-stand of the character described,

constructed with four upright posts having secured thereto three shelves, one above the other, bulletin-boards secured to two opposite sides of the stand and extending above the upper sheltl and below the middle shelf, boards 18 lt secured to the posts and forming the remaining sides of the upper compartment, two sides of the middle compartment being open, and a folding seat secured to the side ot' the stand adjacent to the bulletin-boards, substantially as described.
