TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known i that I, GEORGE W. HUFFXAGL, of New Hope, in the county of Bucks, and in 'the State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Oyster-Knife; and do hereby decl-are that the following is a full,
clear,'and exact descriptiouthereot, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, which give a. view of the knife. This improvement is designed to remedy an objection to the'knives in use, arising from the necessity of grasping the blade in the hand to allow the handle to be used for breaking the edge of the shell, after which the knife must be reversed, soiling both hands and blade, and frequently the oyster'. l
In the annexed drawings,rA represents the handle, made of wrought or castirn, or other metal, having upon the end in which the blade is inserted, a cross-bar, C, each end of which forms the face of a hammeru B is the blade, of customary form, fastened in the handle in any manner that shall make it firm.
To use this knife, the handle is grasped in the hand; and the edge of the oyster-shellbroken by a blow with either e'd ol' the cross-bar, after which the .bla'de is inserted and the shells separated.
The advantages possessed by this improvement over all others in use are,'that`it enables the operator to `open the shells without turning the knife in his hand, lessens his labor, and avoids soiling the blade, and con` sequeutly the oyster. Y
Having thus fully set forth the nature of my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire lto essere by Letters Patent, `is- The knife, composed of the handle A, cross-bar C, and blade B, when constructed in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.`
