TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM EMDRY, of Ashburnham, county of Worcester, Commonwealth of Massa chusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Toy; and I do hereby declare that the following is n. full and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters' oi reference marked thereon. In the drawings- Figure I represents a side view` of iny invention, and

Figure II a detail view of part of same.'

This i-n'ventionconsists of atoy forchildren, constructed so as to represent a small pistol, being arranged so as to iireoi torpedoes, such as are manufactured for the purpose of amusement, and also may be used for projecting' light missiles, such as peas, shot, &c.

l In construction, I form ,my toyI of a stock, A, andbarrel, 13,' a section of the latter being shown in Fig. I. The projectile force is obtained by means ofv a spring, C, fastened at one end on the underneath side of the front portionof the, stock at a, the otherfend being arranged so as ,to fly in a vertical slot, 1)cut through the Vbarrel. Alock andtriggemF, to this spring is formed'in Ath'e following manner: A piece of spring-wire is fastened at the top of thebarrel or stock at I; it is then bent down through the rear part of the slot b, and brought back again to the upper portion of the slot, Vwhere it ends in a small hook, d, leavingl a` lever, consisting of a double wire, below theb'arrel for the trigger. A catch for the end ofthe spring C, when bent back, is formed by cutting anotch, f, inthe end of a horizontal piece 'of wire, fastened upon' the stock or barrel, and projecting over the rear part lvof the slot I); the notch in this piece being on 4oneside of 'and a little beneath the'hook d. In the front portion of'the barrel is the bore, E, which extends back a small distance past the frontend of the slot, so that the spring C enters the rear portion of the bore when it is Sprung,

The operation of this device is as follows: The spring being bent back, and-the end'of it caught in the notch f, where it is held, the torpedo or missile is then placed in the bore, resting againstthe rear portion of it. Now, by pulling the trigger, thehook el presses down against the endof the spring, forcing it out oi` the notch,'and allowing it to ily against the chargelin the front end ofthe barrel. The springiof the'wirc forming the trigger causes the latter to iiy back into its place when the pressure oi the -finger is removed.

By this means I obtain an amusing toy, cheaply and easily constructed, and not` liable to,v get out of order, by which torpedoes may-be exploded without danger of hurting any one.

The combination of lthe spring C with the sloped burrelB, and the trigger and lock F, the parts being arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
