"Leumpqrm No. 75,852, me March 24, 136s.
IMPROVED Sasa-eroe.'
dlgs .Stlntult referat tu in tlps @was lztntv :int uniting pm't nf ille simu.
Be it `known that I, R.' E BUGIIANAN, of Carrollton, in the county of Greene, and Stateof Illinois, have' invented a `new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I llo herehydeclare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference markedthereon. v
This invention relates to a segmental metallic plate, inserted into the substance of the jamb of the windowfi'ame, and operated by an axle, terminating in aknob or handle within the room, the said knob orhandle being, at'fthe Sametime,` capable of f orming a part of the eurtain-fixture for the Window. The segmental plate has a smooth place, of about one-quarter to one-half ineh length, (more or less,)'in the central partbf its periphery;
and the plate is to be rso placed iu. thejarnb ofthe frame that, when this smooth place is turned toward the sash,v
it will not extend beyond the face of thejamb, and, consequently, when in this position, the sash may be moved upfor down.' The periphery ofthe plate, from the beforemen'tioned smooth place to either end ofthe said plate,
is serrated in opposite direetionsfrom the centre, and thea-xle, being` secured to the plate eeeentrically, will, when turned in the required direction, cause'one of the serrations to come'in-'contaet with the edge of the sash, as may :be required, and the sash will, in this ymanner,`be locked up or down, as may be required.
To .e'nable thoselsliilled in the art to make and use my improved sash-lock, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. v
Figure 1, of the drawings, is a frontvelevation of a window fitted with the improved lock.
Figure 2 is a plan of the segmental lock-plate,
The ]'a'mb or stileA andgthe casing A form the window-frame, and guide'the sashes B B4 in the usual manner. -The segmental plate C, clearly shown in plan in lig. 2, has a smooth place, c, in the central part of its periphery, and the serrations, el and c2, occupy vthe remainder of thefcurved .edge of the plate. The serrations el are set in the opposite directionvfrom those on the o ther'side of the centre, marked c2; the object being to adjust and prepare the plate, so as .to turn iteither up or down, and lock the sash'in' either direction, as is usually required for windows. The axle c3, which termina-tes in a'kn'ob, C', inside'of the window-frame, is secured firmly to the plate C in theV hole c4, shown in fig. 2, which said' point of attahment is fixed eccentricallyin the said plate, so as to allow either theiserrations al or c2 to come in vcontact with the edge of the sash-stile, as Ythe plate is'r'evolved inthe proper direction, to secure ,the sash eitherl up or down. One ofthe locks should be applied to each of its snshes, and it would be well to locate them as in fig. 1, where one is on each side of the window, and
hrespectively o'pposit'ejthebottom.rail of the top sash'and the top rail of the bottom sash.
Y Having described my invention, what I claim, 'is s The' locke, of segmental form, provided with the axle c3 and knob C', operating solely as a handle, the
middlepart of the rim ofwhich lock is smooth, while the end parts are serrated, arid all three parts of which.
rim are at such distances'fvom the centre'of motion of the lock as to form a double-acting fastener, substantia-lly as described'.-
