PATENT OFF CE.
JESSE H. CHAPPELL, OF WYAOONDA, MISSOURI.
WHEEL-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,508, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed April 29, 1903- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE H. CHAPPELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wyaconda, in the county of Clark and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Wheelrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheel-jacks, one of the primary objects being to provide a convenient wrench attachment therefor so that the jack will constitute the handle for manipulating the wrench whereby the nut on the end of the axle can be removed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the novel features embodied in the preferred form of the device will be specifically described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention applied, the wheel-hub being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a jack and wrench constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the wrench, the depending portion of the jack sleeved in the wrench being shown in section.
The reference-numeral 1 designates an arm of the jack having adependingportionQ with a bifurcated terminal 3, faced with suitable material 4:, which will prevent the axle (if the I vehicle from being scratched when the jack is applied. The other end of the arm is bent back upon itself, forming a loop 5, which Serial No. 154,867- (No model.)
from the axle, I provide a jaw on the arm 1,
which comprises a pair of expansible and contractible members 9 and 10, connected by a terminal loop 11, which is sleeved upon the depending portion 2 of the arm 1, and preferably Welded. thereto, so that the jaw members will be substantially rigid with relation to the jack, but expansible and contractible with relation to each other. The respective members of the jaw are provided with coinciding shoulders 12 and 13, which are designed to jointly bear against one side of a.
nut, while the parallel extremities of the members bear against two of the opposite sides of the nut, and by turning the jaw through the medium of the jack, which constitutes a handle, the nut can readily be removed. The jaw members can be adjusted toward and away from each other to provide for different-sized nuts by an adjusting-screw 14, which passes through the two members for that purpose.
It is obvious that slight changes in form and proportion can be made without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, and I would therefore reserve the right to make such slight changes and alterations as would properly come within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim A device of the class described comprising a handle and a nut-engaging jaw, comprising two yielding members and an interposed sleeve terminally engaging the yielding jaw members and immovably engaging the handle, and means for adjusting the yielding jaw members with relation to each other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE H. UHAPPELL. Witnesses: Y
