TO ALL WHOM I'l MAYY'CONCERN?.
v Be it known tliat` I, Finanz Vnsrnn, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new'and usefullmprovement in Drills for boring wood, iron, andother metals; and'do hereby declare that `the following is aiull, clear, andfeicact description'of the construction and operation of the same, reference'being had 'tothe accompanying drawings,m aking part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved drill. i lFigure 2a View at right angles to the former. Figure 3 is a plan or top vierwof the guide-plate, used in connection-with the said drill, for purposes here-4 inafter explained; andv Figure 4 a modificatio'of my invention. 4 It .is well known -to machinists and others that to drill' a square or polygonal hole in a piece of wood or iron, for reception of a plug or bolt of similar formone or more circular holeshas in the first place to be bored,
tools,"` as well as a.` shifting of thepiec tolie bored.'V e l In remedying this defect in boring-instruments, by attaching a'spi'ingl-cutter to the drill, and thc'use of a guide-plate, 'so that acircular, polygonal, or square hole may'be bored by one and thesameoperation, consists the na'tureoi' my invention, which,V by rret-erencevtorthel drawings, I will explain as follows:
In 'the said drawings, -A representsV an ordinary drill o' bit, ofwhich alisthe cent-rc, and b b the cutters. To this drill is attached, by means of scrw'si'cd'c, ori'byany other"pro`per 'devicefa springlcutter, B, (see figs. 1 and 2.) This spring-cuttelgfof which theremay be one' or more, Vhas-Aa knife orcuttingLedgqd, which follows and next a square-cutting `drill orreamer, used for cutting out the'angles, thus requiring a change of boringin thewake of the vcutters b, and-while so y. engaged, and"ha'ving the `property of a rigid spring within itself, bears against;l a stay or retainingjpost, projecting outwards from the d'rillA, and also bears against the guide- I plate C, which contains a pattern of the form of hole vtoY Vhev `drilled,.(see' ,Hence it will be seen that while the drill Aho'res out the contre or circular Apart oi' the holc,`the auxiliary Adrill B will bear against the guide-plateC, and while cutting Vwithin the circle described by the'drll A, will recede within the ,recess g of drill, and will .also spring out and bore out the angles of the square or polygonal ho'le to be bored. In y(')perating my'improvcd drill, I merclyplace the guide-plate C with the pattern-hole in position, and clamp thc same to the wood'oriron to be bored# Itlien set the d'rill -in'positiomv and next in motion,'when a hole of any desired shape can be bored, and thus'I produce animproved drill, wliih will bc-,found of great convenience to machinists, carpenters, and others, especially where countersinking is required for thc squurcor polygonal heads of brace-bolts.' v
Having described my invention, what I claim, 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The springcutter'B, the lstay-,post e, and guide-plate C, when-used" in combination with an ordinary drill or auger A, substantially as and for the purposes described and set forth.v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signatuqrgthis fourteenth day of August, A. D. 1867.
