Description

UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIOE.y
LEANDEE cOLT, OE NIAGARA EALLs, NEw YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 80,915, dated August 11, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER COLT, of Niagara Falls, in the town and county of Niagara and State of New York, (Suspension Bridge P. 0.,) have invented a new and usefulv Improvement on Angers or Bits, or an attachment to the same, which may be slipped on a bit or auger or gimlet, and fastened there- On by a screw, for the following purposes: for boring a plug-hole and screw-hole into wood at the saine time, and each hole to the desired depth, while the same attachment may be reversed and used for cutting plugs of wood of the proper size to ll the hole designed for the plug, to cover screws used in the screwholes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description Of the construction and Operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the attachment B B, fastened on the bit or augerA A, and fastened by set-screws D D, which setscrews, or one of them,.are made to fasten the gage c 0*, so that the foot of the same, 0*, will stop the boring at the depth which the said gage may be set for.
The attachment B Bv has a hole lengthwise through the center, large ,enough so that it may be slipped onto an auger or bit a little larger or smaller than the bit A A, represented. As shown in the drawings, it is set for boring the screw-hole and the plug-hole at a given depth. When it is used forl boring plugs from a thin board the attachment is reversed, so that the end at E E is used, and is to be fastened on the bit, so as to extend beyond its end a proper distance.
The drawing No. 2 represents the same parts as inV N o. 1, but represents the whole as if divided in the middle lengthwise, which shows how the bit A A extends through the center of the attachment B B and is fastened with the gage c c* by screws D D.
The whole is to be made of metal suitable for the purpose, and may be used with a bit stock or brace or otherwise.
I do not claim a hollow adjustable bit or a gage, either singly or in combination with each other, for these I know to be old; but
W'hat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The reversible attachmentB B, constructed as described-that is, having a bit at one end and hollow auger at the other-when operated in connection with the gage c* and auger A, as and for the purpose described.
