SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,974, dated April 19, 1904.

To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS W. SIMoox, of Noblesville, county of Hamilton, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Leg-Fastening for Bath-Tubs and the Like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear,;tnd exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.

The object of this invention is to simplify and reduce the expense of the attachment of legs to bath-tubs and the like, and yet have a secure and reliable connection between the leg and the bath-tub.

The nature of this invention willbe understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of a bath-tub with a leg in place, part of the bath-tub being broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the portion of the bathtub to which the leg is secured, a part of the bath-tub being broken away and the leg removed. Fig. 3 an elevation of the lower part of the bath-tub, showing substantially what is shown in Fig. 2, the bath-tub being partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the leg. Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of the leg with the upper part of the leg in section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4 and the bottom of the bath-tub being in section on the same line, a part of the bath-tub being broken away. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the leg with the upper part and bath-tub in section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4, part of the bath-tub being broken away.

In detail, 10 is a bath-tub, and 13 is a leg.

I secure to the bottom of the bath-tub at each of the four corners at the usual or proper placeapair oi downward extensions 14, placed in an inclined position with relation to each other that is, so that lines extended from their sides would meet and not be parallel. The corresponding lateral edges of these are dovetailed. In the drawings it is the outside edges that are dovetailed or beveled, so as to'form, in combination with the bottom of the bathtub, agroove or guidcway for the leg. Either wedged in against said extensions.

the inner or outer edges of said extensions may be thus beveled. About midway between the ends of said extensions that most nearly approach each other there is secured to the bottom of the bath-tub a stop-lug 15, preferably with a straight vertical side facing the space between said extensions. These are simple extensions or lugs extending about onehalf of an inch from the bath-tub and are the only modifications of the smooth under surface of the bath-tub required for the purpose of uniting the legs with it.

The legs may be in any desired shape; but the top thereof has on its two sides the flanges 16, which are opposite each other and extend preferably inward from the leg and are not parallel, but inclined, with an inclination similar to that of the dovetailed edges of the extensions 14, whereby the leg may be shoved laterally into place under the bath-tub with said flanges against and fitting in the dovetailed edges of said extensions and the leg The edges of the flanges 16 are beveled, so as to fit snuglyin the groove formed by the edges and the extensions on the bottom of the bath-tub.

I do not wish to limit myself to an arrangement wherein the parts of the leg envelop the extensions on the bath-tub. The leg is held in its wedged position against said extensions 14 by a screw-bolt 17, extending through the slot 18 in the tongue 19, extendingv horizontally and centrally inward from the upper edge of the leg, as shown in the last three figures of the drawings. Said bolt is screwthreaded on its upper end and has a square nut 20, and there is preferably a washer 21 on the bolt. The nut 20 engages the flat side of the lug 15, so that the nut cannot turn, and as the bolt 17 is turned by a screw-driver it will become tightly clamped on the tongue 19, so that it cannot be removed from said tongue without a screwdriver. Since the bolt 17 is clamped tightly on the tongue 19 and the nut 20 engages the lug 15, the leg cannot be removed without releasing the bolt 17. This will clearly appear from the drawings in Fig. 6. The leg 13 therein would have to be moved to the right to disengage it from the extensions 14:, and it cannot be moved to the right because of the lug 15 being in the path of the nut 20 and said nut and the bolt 17 being clamped tightly on the tongue 19.

WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a bath-tub or the like having a pair of extensions on the bottom thereof inclined with reference to each other and with their corresponding lateral edges dovetailed and having a sto'p-lug about midway of the ends of said extensions, a leg having a pair of oppositelyplaced flanges inclined with relation to each other for engaging the dovetailed edges of said extensions THOMAS W-.
