PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST M. GUMMER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GEM OITY STOVE (10., OF DAYTON, OHIO.
GAS-MIXER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 757,916, dated April. 19, 1904. Application filed February 15, 1904. Serial No. 193,576. (No model.)
To (bi/Z whmn it nuty concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST M. GUMMER, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Mixers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
This invention relates to a mixer for gasburners, such as are used for cooking ranges and stoves.
The object of.the invention is to provide means for regulating the amount of air to be mixed with the gas to form a perfect combustion.
To this end the invention relates specifically to means for securing the mixer-cap in position after the proper area of openings for the admission of air to the mixer has been obtained. Heretofore much difficulty has been experienced in the accidental movement of the mixer-cap controlling the airports, whereby said air ports or openings either become enlarged or closed to an undesirable extent.
The present invention obviates the possibility of accidental displacement of the mixercap.
It may be further stated that prior to the present invention it has been customary to secure the mixer-cap in position by means of a set-screw and screw-driver. In such cases the usual small set-screw would become rusted and corroded to such an extent that its removal by a screw-driver would often result in the breaking of the screw and a removal of the entire burner became necessary in order to release the mixer-cap. This difliculty is entirely obviated by the present invention.
Preceding a detail description of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the mixer and mixer-cap. The burner is also shown in this view partly broken away.
Fig. 2 are detail views of the specially-constructed mixer or clamp-nut. Fig. 3 is afront elevation of the mixer, showing the mixer-cap the proper admixture of gas and air is introduced to a burner 2 through the mixer-tube 3, the burner, mixer-tube, and head being preferably of a single casting in order to obviate the possibility of leakage at points between the mixer-head and the burner. The mixer, it will be observed, is enlarged in the form of a head, in the outer rounded surface of which there is provided a series of. air ports or openings 4, arranged at opposite points. There is also a central screw-threaded opening 5, which is engaged by the exteriorly-screwthreaded hollow stem 6 of the clamp-nut 7, said nut being screwed into said opening by means of the wings 8, projecting therefrom. The clamp-nut is provided with a smooth bore 9 of uniform diameter extending entirely through the nut, which is designed to receive the discharge end 10 of the gas-regulating cock 11. Interposed between the head of the nut 7 and the mixer-head 1 there is a mixercap 12, which acts as a valve. This cap snugly fits against the outer rounded surface of the mixer-head and is provided with a number of openings or ports 13, which correspond in number and in shape to the air ports or openings 4: in the mixer-head. This mixercap may be turned upon the mixer-head to the desired positions to restrict or enlarge the air ports or openings through which the air is admitted to the interior of the mixer. As shown in Fig. 3, the air ports or openings leading to the mixer-head are reduced to about one-half of their full capacity by shifting the mixer-cap 12 to either side, after which the clamp-nut 7 is screwed into the mixer-head, and the shoulder or head of said nut is thereby caused to bind the mixer-cap 12 rigidly against the mixer-head, and all possibility of said' cap shifting its position is obviated, and, further, the mixer-cap may be released with facility by turning said nut when it becomes necessary to alter the size of the air-openings.
The gas-regulating cock 11 is provided with a shoulder 14:, which fits against the outer side of the head of the clamp-nut 7 and allows some slight movement of said nut away from the mixer-cap whenever it becomes necessary to readjust the air-openings to decrease or enlarge the area of said openings. The extent of movement necessary to be imparted to said nut under such cases is very small, only being sufficient to release the pressure of the nut against the mixer-cap. 15 designates a gassupply pipe With which the gas-regulating cock 11 is connected.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of a mixer-head having a series of ports for the admission of air, and a central screw-threaded opening, a'mixer-cap fitting against said mixer-head and provided with corresponding openings registering with the openings in the mixer-head, a clamp-nut having a tubular screw-threaded stem which penetrates the central openings in the mixerhead and mixer-cap, the head of said nut engaging said cap and clamping it against the mixer-head, and a gas-supply cock having its discharge-stem projecting through said nut and discharging gas into the mixer-head.
2. In a fuel-gas burner, a mixer-head having a series of air ports or openings and a central opening, a mixer-cap inclosing the outer side of the mixer-head and having a series of air ports or openings which may register with the air ports or openings in the mixerhead and whereby the discharge of air to the mixer is regulated, a clamp-nut screwed into the central opening in said mixer-head and binding the mixer-cap against said head to make permanent the position of the openings in said cap with relation to the openings in the mixer-head, the said clamp-nut having an opening through its center for the reception of the discharge end of a gas-regulating cock.
3. The combination of a gas-mixer having the outer surface of its head rounded and provided with a series of air-openings and a central screw-threaded opening, a mixer-cap conforming to the shape of the mixer-head and having a series of air-openings which register with the similar openings in the mixerhead, and a central opening which registers with the central screw-threaded opening in the mixer-head, a clamping-nut having a tubular screw-threaded stem which penetrates the central openings in the mixer-cap and the mixer-head, said nut having an annular shouldischarging gas into the center of the mixerhead.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST M. GUMMER.
