SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,329, dated August 25, 18916.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MAGEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Venham, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts,have invented a new and useful Improvenient in GasBurners for Stoves, Ranges, dre. of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates especially to means for supplying air and gas to the chamber of the burner; and it comprises an air-passage s urrounding a gas-inlet havin g a conical opening and a conical valve preferably arranged to be adjusted upon the gas-supply pipe and adapted to regulate or vary the size of the air-inlet and in a manner to provide a continuous inflow of air about the gas-discharging nozzle or inlet, thereby providing for a uniform admixture of air and gas before consumption.
In the drawings there is shown enough of a range to indicate the application of the invention thereto.
Figure l is a view in plan of as much of the burner attached to a range as is necessary for showing the invention. Fig. 2 is a view lin section upon the dotted line of Fig. l, also showing a portion of the top plate of a range and of a cover-hole and cover. Fig. 3 is a detail view, to which reference is hereinafter made.
A is a burner. It is represented as circular in shape, and it is like the conventional burners of the circular type, that is, it has the circular gas-chamber ot, the outlets ct therefrom, the inner air-fines a2, and a gas-supply passage a3 in a short lateral pipe or extension of, which is integral with the casting, which forms the burner and which preferably has at its end an interior screw-thread a5, by means of which it is attached to a nozzle B, which has the exterior thread b, with which the thread a5 of the burner is engaged. The nozzle B extends inward from a plate b' of the range, stove, or other device with which the burner is used, and there is thus provided a conical entrance b2 to the chamber a of the burner, which opens to the outer air and which provides means whereby the outer air is supplied to the chamber a of the gas-burner. This conical entrance surrounds the gas-supply pipe c, which extends from a gas-1nain O into the passage a3, the inlet c of said supply-pipe being preferably at the entrance of this passage and at the inner end of the conical entrance b'. The gaspipc c is provided with the screw-thread c2, and upon this there is arranged to screw or turn the valve B', which is of conical form and which also has the threaded hole b3, the thread of which screws on the thread o2 of the gas-supply pipe c. This conical valve is of a shape to enter the conical entrance h2, and it is adjustable therein from a closed relation thereto when it seats, preferably by means of the iiange b4, closing against the plate from which the nozzle extends. This valve B preferably has short projections b5, by which it may be turned. The gassupply pipe c has a gascock D, provided with a handle or arm d, and the stops CZ limit the extent of movement of the arm and to indicate when the cock is wide open and closed.
The advantages of the invention arise from the arrangement and shape of the air-inlet and valve in relation to the gas-supply pipe and inlet whereby provision for a supply of air upon all sides of or surrounding the inflowing gas-current is obtained, the air and gas thus being disposed in a relation to each other or in the best form to insure a proper union or admixture of the two before burning; also from the location of the air-valve in the plate of the range or stove where it can be easily reached and operated; also in the structure whereby the gaseinlet pipe is made to support the air-inlet valve.
It has been seen that the volume of air is readily varied by moving the conical valve inward or outward, and that the proportion of air to gas can thus be very easily regulated. It will also be seen that both the cock for controlling the gas supply and the valve for regulating the air supply are upon the outside of the stove or range plate and in such close relation to each other that the manipulations of both necessary for producing the proper combustion can easily be seen and made. I do not confine the invention to the type of gas-4 burner shown and described, as it may be IOO A and the air inlets or holes c between the arms e2. The central hole e acts to receive and center the inlet-pipe c2, and it is desirable that the inner end c3 of this pipe should be made conicalin order that it may more readily center itself in the hole. In thus centering itself it also of course centers the valve B, so that it bears a uniform relation to the conical Wall of the air-inlet. This construction is especially desirable where there are two or more gas-inlet pipes c2 extending from the main C on the saine line to as many burners, as it provides for the independent and easy ccntering of each of the gas-inlet pipes c2 in respect to its special air-inlet and therefore of each of the regulating-valves B.
I prefer to construct the valve B with the flange b4, as it is more easily adjusted to the conical entrance b2 when made in this manner. If the flange is left out, it is necessary that the edges of the nozzle B and the valve B' be accurately beveled so as to lit each other. The employment of the flange h4 renders this unnecessary.
While I have shown my valve as being conical in forni, I do not limit myself to that construction, but I desire also to be able to claim a valve in the shape of a flat disk adapted to screw on a supply-pipe c in a similar manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination in a gasburner for stoves, ranges, itc., of the passage a3, the inlet-pipe c2, having the tapering end e3, the valve BQ adjustable on the outside of the inlet-pipe and the centering device comprising a Washer E fitting tightly in the passage a3, having the arms c", the tapering central hole e, and inlets c,whereby the inlet-pipe may be adj usted to lie in the center of the passage a?, as and for the purposes described.
