PATENT OFFIC EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,544, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed DecemberlQ, 1903. Serial No. 185,77 3. (N6 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH DOBRODENKA- and FRANK DOBRODENKA, citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. Our invention relates to extension-tables, each of which comprises two leaves independently movable, with legs and slides to be pushed beneath the table-top or drawn out and secured level with the same, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the acconr panying drawings, and subsequently claimed. Figure 1 of the drawings represents aplan view of an extensiontable in accordancewith our invention as it appears when the two leaves of same are drawn outand the top removed; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section view of a fragment of the table central of the same, one of the leaves being drawn out and the top canted; Fig. 3, a transverse section view indicated by lines 3 3 in the second figure, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are illustrations of details of latch mechanism embodied in said table.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a rectangular frame, and in practice this frame is supported on suitable legs. Rigidly connected to the frame A are upwardlyextending side bars B, and likewise connect ed to said frame adjacent to each of the side bars are oppositely-inclined tracks C D, each provided with an upper tongue I), engaging a groove 0 in a slide E, to which a table-leaf F is fastened, there being two leaves and two slides for each leaf.
Stop-blocks (Z are made fast in upper notches aforesaid to limit outward movement of the same, their inward movement being limited by other stop-blocks f, depending from a longitudinally-slotted cross-piece H in rigid connection with the side bars B midway of the extremities of same.
ed. arm of a bell-crank; lever M, hung between Engaging theslot g in the cross-piece H is a batten I, fast to the under side of the tabletop J, this top being removable to permit of access to other parts of the table.
To facilitate the movement of the slides E on their tracks C D, antifriction-rollers h are arranged in connection with said tracks adjacent to their outer ends and engage the grooves c in said slides.
' In depending rigid connection with the under side of each of the table-leaves F, to project inward from the same, is a bracket K,
this bracket being slotted to serve as a guide for a carrier L, in which a roller 2' is mount- The carrier is pivotally connected to an bracket-arms, and this lever has a hook extension for engagement with a keeper 7c in depending connection with the table-top batten I, longitudinally of the same. The other arm of the bell-crank lever is connected to the inner end of a link N, the outer end of the link being at a right angle to the remainder and provided with an aperture,.whereby. it
serves as a bearing for a rod P, that is guided its guides m n, and said rod is provided with notches r r at right angles to each other.
Guided on the angular, shank s of a button set in a recess of the table-leaf end bar forward of the guide-plate a thereon is a longiti1dinaIly-slotted latch- S under a spring m, this latch being for engagement with the notches in therod P, and a handle 2. is shown in "pivotal connection with the outer end of said rod. To limit turning of the rod in either direction, the inner end of the same has a bent pin a set therein to strike at either end against the link N aforesaid.
The cross-pieceH aforesaid is provided with central notches o to obtain clearancefor the rollers 11, and recesses w are provided in the under side of the table-top J for the same purpose.
The table-leaves F and parts in connection therewith being pushed beneath the table-top A spiral spring 1; is arranged on the rod P between J, each spring-controlled rod P is turned to disengage its notch 7 from the latch S, and expansion ofthe spring :1 on said rod causes the latter and the link N therewith to swing the corresponding bell-crank lever M and depress the roller-carrier L, connectedthereto, while at the same time the hook extension j of said lever is caught in the keeper 70, depending from the under side of the table-top, and the notch r of the aforesaid rod engaged .by said latch. Hence the table-leaves and parts therewith are locked in the adjustment beneath the table-top.
To draw out a table-leaf, the rod P therewith is manipulated the reverse of what is above explained to unlock said leaf and cant the table-top, this canting operation being the result of a lift of a roller 2', that bears against the under side of said table-top when said table-leaf and parts therewith are drawn out, whereby the friction that would otherwise result is eliminated. The table-leaf being drawn out, the rod P therewith is manipulated to lower the roller 2', opposing the table-top, and this top is then level with said leaf, the canted and normal positionof said top being shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 2.
When the leaves F are pushed beneath the top J, the side and vbars B Q, abut to inclose the tracks, slides, and other parts of the table, and blocks as may be used, in connection with. the dependingbatten I of the table-top, to prevent said top from being displaced.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is
1. An extension-table comprising a frame provided with upwardly-extending side bars and oppositely-inclined tracks, slides on the tracks, leaves faston the slides, end. bars and brackets depending from the leaves, carriers guided in the brackets, antifriction-rollers mounted in the carriers, bell-crank levers in connection with said carriers and provided with hook extensions, spring-controlled pullrods extending through said end' bars, links connecting said levers and the pull rods, spring-controlled latches arranged in conjunction with the end bars to engage notches at right angles to each other in said rods, a slotted cross-piece fast on said sidebars midway of their extremities and provided with notches normally engaged by said rollers, a top having a depending batten loose in the cross-piece slot, a keeper depending from said batten for the engagement of the hook extensions of the aforesaid levers, and means for limiting play of said slides. v
2. An extension-table comprising a frame provided with upwardly-extending side bars and oppositely-inclined tracks, slides on the track, leaves fast on the slides, end bars and brackets depending from the leaves, having carriers guided in the brackets, antifrictionrollers mounted in the carriers, bell-crank levers in connection with said carriers and provided with hook extensions, spring-controlled pull-rods extending through, said end bars, links connecting said levers and the pull-rods, stops extending from said rods to come into contact with the links, spring-controlled latches arranged in the end bars to engage notches at right angles to each other in the aforesaid rods, a slottedcross-piece fast on said side bars midway of their extremities and provided with notches normally engaged by said rollers, a top havinga depending batten loose in the cross-piece slot, a keeper depending from said batten for the engagement of the hook. extensions of the aforesaid levers, and means for limiting play of said slides.
In testimony that we-claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
