IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,387, dated September 18,1877 application filed May 3, 1877.

To all whomjt may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN R. Oseoon, of the city of Godillac, Wexford county, Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improved Extension-Table; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, as making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of the table, showing an end view when closed. Fig. 2 is an end elevation when extended, with one fall-leaf dropped. Fig. 3 is a bottom view. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the table-bed, showing saw-kerfs. Fig. 5 shows bracket, with process of fastening spring.

My invention relates to extension-tables; and consists in certain improvements therein, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the main leaves of my improved extension-table, hinged to the upper faces of the legs R at l, and also hinged to the dropleaves J J. The legs R B are connected in pairs by longitudinal bars S, and each is provided with a transverse arm, D, having inclined planes 8 and a stop, B. Each opposite pair of the transverse arms D embrace a vertical central piece, 0, provided with straps G, through which the arms D slide, and pins E.

H H represent rollers, pivoted in the straps G, between which the'arms D pass, to lessen the friction in sliding them in and out.

B represents the central top face of the table, attached to the vertical central pieces 0. The upper inner ends of the legs are rabbeted to receive projections on the upper ends of the central pieces 0, to prevent any vertical movement of them when the table is closed.

0 0 represent diagonal braces, extending from the outer ends of the inner arms D to the longitudinal bars S, connecting the legs R.

In extending the table when closed the legframes are drawn out, and the top B, with its attachments O, is raised as the rollers H H, attached thereto, ride up the inclined planes s until the stops F come in contact with the rollers H H, when any outward movement of the leg-frames is prevented.

The pins E, in contact with the upper edges of the inclined planes 8 on the arms D, prevent any tilting movement when the table is extended.

When the table has been extended the hinged leaves A are flush with the top B, which is provided with pins (not seen in the drawing) in its longitudinal edges, which fit in corresponding recesses in the inner longitudinal edges of the leaves A.

J J represent leaves hinged to the leaves A, and provided on their under faces with bearings' M, for the reception of a rock-shaft, T, surrounded by a coiled spring, N, the tension of which is exerted to throw the rock-shaft and the support L inwardly into engagement with a groove in the cross-bar S,.and thus hold up the leaf.

When the table is extended, and the prop or support L is in engagement with the groove in the bar S, the leaves are held in contact with the top B, and the hinged leaves A cannot be raised from their horizontal position until the supports L are withdrawn from their grooves.

in closing the table the props L must be withdrawn from engagement with their grooves, the leaves A slightly raised over the top B, and the leg-frames forced together, when, by reason of the rollers H H riding down the inclined planes 8 on the arms D, the top B, with the central pieces 0, will descend, and the leaves A are folded down on the top B, so that their inner longitudinal edges will be in contact, and their upper horizontal faces flush, with each other.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The central pieces (3, connected together by the top B, and provided with the straps G, carrying the rollers H H, in combination with the leg-frames R S, having arms D, provided with inclined planes 8, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The central pieces 0, connected by the top B, and provided with the pins E and straps G, carrying the rollers H H, In combination with the leg-frames R S, having arms D, provided with inclined planes 8, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

5. The legs R, connected by the longitudinal bars S, and provided with the arms D, in combination with the diagonal braces o, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
