BABY-COACH 'OR GO-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,883, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed September 5,1901 Serial No. 74,356- (No model.)
T (tZZ whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUSTUS R. LAMP- LU GH and HARRY LEVI, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baby- Coaches or Go-Garts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of an improvement Io in baby-coaches and go-carts, and is designed to provide mechanism for tilting the back and footpiece thereof and for locking said parts in their adjusted position and for tilting the back independently of the footpiece.
The invention further consists of details of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the go-cart constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section thereof, taken on line a; to, Fig. 2. Fig. 4c represents a section taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 2. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 represent de- 2 5 tail views.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a portion of the frame of a coach, B the tilting back, and C the pivoted footpiece. Extending from the frame A are the side plates D, provided with a series of openings to receive thepins E, extending through the ends of the outside dowels F of the back and forming 3 5 part of the means for locking said back. The inner ends of these pins are provided with racks G, suitably guided in a casing H, secured to a cross-piece J of the back. Situated within the casing H and engaging with the rack is a gear K, that is rigidly secured to a spindle L, forming part of the devices for actuating said locking means, said spindle L preferably passing through the center dowel M of the back, the upper end of said 5 spindle being provided with a handle N. A
spring P encircles the spindle L and is secured at its opposite ends to said spindle and the cross-piece J of the back and exerts a tension upon the spindle in a direction to cause it to rotate to move the pins E outwardly, so that they will enter the openings in the plates D to hold the back in its adjusted position, it being noted that by turning these spindles against the tension-spring these pins are drawn inwardly to allow the back to be tilted.
The footpiece is suitably pivoted to the frame A, as at R, and is connected, by means of links S and T, with the sliding member U, mounted upon the guide V, mounted on a stationary part of the coach. The link S is pivoted to the footpiece, as at W, and passes between the legs of an upright guide X, fastened to the frame, and at its other end is pivoted to the link T. The link Tis pivoted at one end to the sliding member U and at its other end passes through a guide-block Y, pivoted to the upright guide X. The guide V is curved concentrically with the pivot of the back 13, and I provide interlocking means between the guide V and the sliding member U to lock the same immovable when the footpiece is elevated, and in the instance illustrated I employ a catch Z, that is adapted to engage the upper portion of said guide V, a convenient arrangement for effecting this consisting of an opening A in said guide V, that is engaged by the finger B of the catch, said finger being pressed against the side of the guide V by means of a spring C, fastened to the slidable member U, The spindle L extends through the casing H and is provided with a member, conveniently a lug or shoulder D, that is adapted to engage the catch Z to withdraw its finger B'from the opening A. This lug D also engages the shoulder E of the catch, so as to make a positive connection between the spindle and the sliding memberU, whereby the latter can be drawn downwardly to depress the footpiece C.
The operation is as follows: When the back piece stands in an upright position and the footpiece is depressed, as shown in Fig. 1, the sliding member U is at thelowerend of the guide V and the pins E are in engagement with the lowermost opening of the plate D. By turning the spindle L the pins are withdrawn, and then the back can be tilted downwardly to any desired extent, which will, by
reason of the engagement between the lower end of the spindle and the sliding member U, raise the footpiece. When the spindle is released, the spring E will force the pins outwardly and into the desired opening in the plates D to hold the parts in this position. By depressing the back until the sliding member is raised to the upper end of the guide V the finger B on catch Z engages said opening, and the footpiece will be held in this position, it being noted that when the back is tilted to raise the sliding member to this position the pins will have passed the uppermost opening of the plate D, when by moving the back upwardly a little distance the pins will engage the uppermost opening, or the back can be raised to any desired extent independently of the footpiece and leaving the footpiece in its elevated position. When it is desired to lower the footpiece, the back is tilted until the lug on the spindle stands opposite the catch Z, and then by turning the spindle against the action of the spring until its member D engages the shoulder E on the catch Z the catch is not only turned on its pivot to withdraw its finger B from the opening A, but the member by engaging the shoulder E connects the spindle and sliding member, so that as the back is moved up wardly the sliding member and footpiece are depressed.
Although we have shown and described in this application a tiltable back, locking devices at the lower end portion thereof, and a handle or finger-piece at the upper end portionthereof suitably connected with the lockingdevices for actuating the same, the connecting-piece being so arranged that it extends only in the plane of the back, we do not in this application claim such a construction, as the same is claimed in an application filed by us August 28, 1901, Serial No. 73,558, for a baby-coach or go-cart.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a frame of a coach or go-cart, of a tiltable back and footpiece, locking means for holding said back and frame relatively immovable, and devices for actuating said locking means to connect or disconnect the back and frame and by means of which said footpiece is engaged and moved with the back.
2. A coach or go-cart having a tiltable back and footpiece, locking means for said back, a movable member connected with said footpiece, and devices for actuating said locking means, and by means of which said movable member is engaged and said footpiece moved with the back.
3. A coach or go-cart having a tiltable back and footpiece, locking means for said back, a movable member connected with said footpiece, a catch to hold said member, and devices for actuating said locking means and for actuating said catch and by means of which said movable member is engaged and the footpiece moved with the back.
4. A coach having a tiltable back and footpiece, a guide mounted upon a stationary part of the coach, a sliding member mounted upon said plate and connected with the footpiece, a catch carried by said sliding member and adapted to engage said guide, means for tilting the back and for holding it in adjusted position, said means being normally disconnected from and movable independently of said sliding member and provided with a member to engage said catch and sliding member for disengaging the catch and guide and for moving said sliding member upon the guide when the back is tilted.
