PATENT OFFICE.
CARTRIDGE-BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 756,178, dated March 29, 1904.
Application led January 2, 1904.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, ANsoN MILLS, of the United States Army, (retired,) a citizen of the United States, residing in Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge-Belts, of which the following is a specification.
The belt to which my improvement is drected is a woven cartridge-belt having cartridge-pockets woven integral with the body of the belt and individual covers for the pockets.
The improvement consists of a certain construction and arrangement of the cover for the purpose of securely retaining the cartridges, which can best be explained and understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, to which I shall now refer.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a belt embodying my improvement. One of the pockets thereon is represented as filled with cartridges and having theA cover lifted, and the cover of the neXt pocket on the right is represented as detached from the pocket. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection through one of the pockets and its lifted cover. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of one of the pockets. Fig. 4 is a rear view of a portion of the belt-body, showing the eyelets by' which the cover is attached thereto.
A is the body of the belt. B represents pockets woven integral therewith in the manner described in Orndorfs patent, No. 666,687, of January 29, 1901, and C represents the covers, made also of woven fabric and provided with suitable fasteners e for holding them shut. Each cover is secured to the inner face of the back wall of its pocket, near the top thereof, by eyelets Z or other suitable means.
The characteristic of the cover is that it is wider than its pocket and that itis prolonged Serial No. 187,596. (No model.)
below the point of its attachment to the belt, as a loose strip c of like width which extends down within the pocket substantially to the bottom of the same. 'Ihe result of this construction is that the cover is areallyeifective cover for the cartridges in the pocket, closing the loopholes for escape, which with the ordi-v nary cover are usually found at the ends of the pocket, while as the strip c is wider than the back wall of the pocket against which it lies its side edges when cartridges are placed in the pocket will be crimped or turned over and hold them in place.
The device is effective to retain the cartridges in their pocket under all service conditions, while admitting of their being easily got at and removed whenever the exigency arises.
The improvement is applicable to all styles of cartridge-belts, whether the waist-belt or the bandoleer.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A woven cartridge-belt having cartridge-receiving pockets, and covers therefor, ofgreater width than the pockets to which they are applied, attached to the back wall of their pockets, and prolonged below their point of attachment as loose strips of similar width, which extend substantially to the bottom of their respective pockets, as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Anson MILLS.
