Letters Patent No. 75,594, dated .March 17, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT Infine-Pers son srovns.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY; CONGERN:l
Be it known that I, DAVIDAL. STILES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, und State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Pots for Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exactidcscription thereof, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a'perspective view of my improved fire-pot.
Figure 2, a central vertical section.
Figure 3, a horizontal section.
Figure 4, a View of one of the staves.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention consists in the combination, with a re-pot constructed of iron stares iitting together, of 1ongitudinal passages through the same, for the passage of air, and perforations, slots, or equivalent openings from said passages, throughthe whole inner surface of the fire-pot, for the lintroduction ofthe air to burn the gases, as hereinafter set forth. v
In thedrawings is shown the fire-pot, which is composed of a series of cast-iron staves, A A, ittting together, at top and bottom,'in rings a alot' the plates of the stove, as represented. These staves are -so cast as to form ilongitudinal air-passages or grooves, c c, through the walls oi'V the fire-pot, as most clearly shown in the crossseotion, fig. 3.V Iprefer to cast ahalt` groove in each side of a stave, as shown; but, if desired, the whole groove may he formed in the ,centre of each stave. These grooves extend from bottom to top of the Ere-pot. From the grooves c c numerous perforations, slots, or equivalent passages, ff, open radially to the interior of the Ere-pot, thus covering its whole inner surface with air-holes; as indicated.
This making of the fire-pot in stares, and the combination therewith of the air-passages and numerous perforations, not only secures simplicity in construction, but also secures a. most complete combustion. and burning of the gases, which usually escape. Whenever any portionA of the tire-pot burns out it is easily replaced'. The
air-passages, however, in a great degree, preventburning out, by keeping the staves cool. The contraction of the top -of thc fire-pot, as shown, causes the gases to Ypass slowly along the inner surface of the same, and, the air from thenumerous perforationsfj' coming in contact therewith, supplies the necessary oxygen to produce a most perfect combustion. The great surface et' theire-pot occupied by the said perforations insures the supply of a continuous sheet of air. I
It will be noticedV that the casting et' the staves is very readily accomplished so as to fit together and form both the passages c and perforationsf. It is only necessary to cast grooves for the one and notches for the other, as shown `in fig. 4.
By the means above described, it will be noticed that I allow the passage of air directly through the staves i forming the walls of the tire-pot, whereby I notonly simplify the construction, but also produce a greater heating-power hy radiation directly from the body of the fire-pot without the interposi/tion of a surrounding cylinder, as is required in allbthcr stoves of this hind with which I am acquainted where air must he held to the body of the fire-pot to allow it to pass through holes in the sides. By passing the air directly through the .stavcs themselves, I avoid the necessity'oi' such a surroundingcylinder.
I do not claim simply forming a fire-pot of staves, nor simply air-passages and perforations in other relations, as I am aware that each has before been used separately; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, witha fire-pot formed of' a series of s taves, of passages formed in said stares, which will allow air to pass directly through the wall of the lire-potri'rem the base, as herein set forth.
I also claim, in combination with a'iire-pot, made of a series of staves, and having air-passages passing directly through the walls oi' the fire-pot from the hase, a series of perforations, slots, or equivalent passages, opening through the whole interior of the fire-pot to admit air to burn the gases, as herein set forth.
lIn witness'whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID L. STILEVS.
