OIL-CAN.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,927, dated. March 29, 1904.

Be it known that I, FRANK B. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Robinson,
in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil-cans; and its object is to provide means for automatically sealing the outlet to the can when the same is not in use, said sealing means being adapted for use in removing dust and dirt from parts to which the'oil is to be applied.
A further object is to provide means whereby the sealing and cleaning device can be automatically retracted when the oil-can is used.
With theabove and other objects in view the invention consists in providing an oil-can having a frame therein, upon which is mounted mechanism having a plunger extending therefrom, said plunger being slid ably mounted within the outlet of the oil-can. The diaphragm of the oil-can is connected to the plunger-operating mechanism, whereby said plunger is retracted when the diaphragm is depressed for the expulson of oil from the tank.
The invention also consists of the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical transverse section through an oil-can constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the figure by numerals of reference, 1 is a can of any suitable contour, having a diaphragm 2, which forms the bottom thereof. An outlet-tube 3 is detachably connected to the bottom of the can and has an aperture 4: in its outer end, which is normally closed by means of a plunger 5. The outer end of this plunger normally projects beyond the end of the tube 8, while the inner end is pivotally connected to the crank 6, mounted on a pin 7 which is revolubly mounted in a frame 8, located 'within the can and preferably secured to opposite edges of the diaphragm 2. The pin 7 has a'gear 9 secured thereto, and this gear meshes with a rack 10, formed upon the inner edge of one side of a preferably oval-shaped frame 11. This frame is secured to the center of diaphragm 2 by means ofan arm 12. It will be understood that when it is desired to remove dirt from the part of a machine which is to be oiledthe projecting end of the plunger 5 can be used for that purpose. Subsequent to this operation the diaphragm 2 is depressed and causes the rack 10 to rotate the gear 9, thereby partly rotating the crank 6 and drawing the plunger 5 from the aperture 4. Oil is then free to flow from the tube.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination with an oil-can having a diaphragm at one end and an outlet-tube at the other end; of an arch-frame within the can and secured at its ends to opposite edges of the diaphragm, a revoluble pin journaled within the frame, a crank at one end thereof, a gear at the other end a plunger pivoted to the crank and slidably mounted within, and normally projecting from, the outlet-tube, an arm secured to the center of the diaphragm, a frame integral with said arm and extending to opposite sides of the gear, and a rack integral with the frame and meshing with the gear.
