To all whom, it but concern:

Be it known that I, STANIsLAs BEAUREGARD, of the city of Montreal,in the district of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Tackers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,and exact description of the same.

My invention has for its object to provide a hand-tacker adapted to carry a coiled string of nails, a device for feeding the nails of the string and severing them therefrom, and a plunger in combination with said device and having a laterally-projecting arm, to which one end of a lever is connected with a sliding connection, the other end thereof being connected pivotally to the handle of the tacker, while'the severing and feeding device, which also constitutes a hammer, is pivotally connected to said lever in such a way as to prevent any movement thereof relatively to said lever other than its pivotal movement, the differential movement between the plunger and lever being compensated by the sliding connection.

For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in which similar reference characters indicate like parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand-tacker constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the operating end of my improved tacker. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the plunger removed; and Figs. 4. and 5 are similar views, respectively, of the lever and the operating end of the guiding-handle.

A handle I) is provided having its lower end elongated, while it has an opening 0 longitudinally therethrough and a transverse opening cl. A plunger slides in this longitudinal opening, and consists of a rod 6, having a handle f upon its upper end and its lower end bent at right angles, as at g, and its extremity bent downwardly and perforated, as at it. through which a pin carried by the down' wardly-bent end of the plunger projects, said pin having an antifriction-roller Z thereon. The nail feeding and severing device is operated by this lever, and consists of a reciprocatory carrier m, having a cutter 0 in its lower end and its body portion slotted, as at p. A bracket 9 upon the handle has a transverse portion extending through the slot in this carrier,while a stop,consisting of a plate 0, is carried by the carrier and adapted to engage said transverse portion of the bracket when the carrier is in its full back position. A retractile helical spring 8 normally yieldingly retains this carrier, and with it the plunger, in its uppermost position, and a spring-pawl t prevents the retrogression of the string of nails when the plunger is returned to its normal position. The carrier is pivotally connected to the lever by a pin u,projecting through the perforated upper end thereof and through the lever.

A bracket 2 is secured to the side of the handle, near the lower end thereof, and supports a reel 3, upon which the string of nails 4 is wound.

Operation: Upon the plunger being depressed its transverse arm will swing the lever '6 to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1, thus causing the carrier on to slide downwardly along the elongated lower end of the handle, thereby causing the cutter 0 to engage behind the head of the lowermost nail, force said nail out of the lower end of the handle, and sever it from the string, owing to the shearing action due to the cutter being forced into contact with the inner wall of the throat As the plunger continues its movement the cutter 0, acting as a hammer, drives the nail into the work. The difl'erential movement between the plunger and lever is compensated by the slot-and-pin connection, while the pivotal connection between the cutter-carrier m and lever, without any allowance for lateral movement, facilitates the easy working of the device.

What I claim is as follows:

1. A hand-tacker, comprising a handle, a plunger movable longitudinally of said handle and slidably connected thereto said plunger having a portion extending therefrom at right angles thereto, a device for supporting a coiled string of nails, a device for feeding the nails of the string and severing them therefrom, means pivotally connecting said nail feeding and severing device to the portion of said plun ger extending at right angles thereto to move therewith, and means yieldingly retaining said device in position to engage the string of nails.

2. In a hand-tacker, the combination with a handle, of a plunger slidably supported upon said handle and consisting of a rod having a handle upon its upper end and its lower end bent to extend laterally, and a device for feeding the nails of a string and severing the nails therefrom, and a lever connecting the lateral portion of the rod to said device, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

In a hand-tacker, the combination with a handle, a plunger slidably supported upon said handle and consisting of arod having ahandle upon its upper end and its lower end bent at right angles, and a device for feeding the nails of a string and severing the nails therefrom, of a lever pivotally connected at one end to the main handle, and slidably and pivotally connected at its other end to the end of the portion of the rod bent at right angles, substanvsasae I tially as described and for the purpose set forth.

In a hand-tacker, the combination with a handle, a plunger slidably supported upon said handle and consisting of a rod having a handle upon its upper end and its lower end bent at right angles, of a lever having one end fulcrumed to the main handle at a point below the bent portion of said plunger, and its opposite end slotted such lever being furnished with a perforation, apin carried by said trans- Verse portion of the plunger and projecting through the slot in said lever, a device for feeding a string of nails and severing the nails therefrom, said device having its upper end perforated, a pin projecting through said perforation and through the perforation in said lever thus effecting a pivotal connection between said device and lever, and means yieldingly retaining said device normally away from the operating end of the tacker, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
