SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 519,859, dated May 15, 1894.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAin FRE'ICHETTE, of Montreal, in the province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Lasting- Tools, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to hand lasting tools, and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and to the claims hereto appended and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.

Fig. 9 1ios a side elevation of the receiver operating In the drawings A and B are two levers pivoted together at a and provided at their front ends with the pincher jaws A and B and at their opposite ends with the shear like bows A and B to receive the thumb and fingers of the right hand for manipulating the same. The jaw A has formed thereon or secured thereto near the fulcrum a the hammer head I) which serves the double purpose of a fulcrum to rest upon the inner sole while the operator presses downward upon the bow ends of said levers A and B to strain the upper of the shoe upward, and as a hammer to hammer down the upper or any imperfectly driven tacks. The jaw B has set in a suitable bearing therein the plunger cwhich carries at its lower end the steel driver 0' and at its upper end the horizontally projecting arm 0 which embraces the guide rod d and has pivoted thereto the pendent lifter bar e which has a second bearing between guide rolls at f, f, and has formed on its rear edge the cam and with the shoulder c with which the forward end of the lever C engages to raise said plunger against the tension of the spring I) attached at its lower end to the jaw B and at its upper end to the arm 0 The lifter bar e has formed on its front edge the shoulder c with which the stop pawl g engages to lock the plunger 0 in its raised position as shown in Fig. 1. The pawl g is pressed into engagement with the shoulder e when the plunger is raised, by the spring h acting upon a pin set'in the side of the bar 71/ pivoted at one end to said pawl and provided with a slot 2' in its other end, with which the pin 'i' set in the short arm of the elbow lever E engages to move said bar toward the front of the tool and thus disengage said pawl from the shoulder c and permit the plunger 0 to be forced downward by the spring D to drive a tack or nail, deposited beneath the driver a, the nose of the jaw B being provided with asnitable guidewayj for the passage of said nail, as shown in Fig. 3. The jawB is also provided with an oblique channel or passageway 7.: down which the string of connected nails is fed to the separating cutters and the driver.
The wire from which. the nails are formed is rolled so as to form a series of projections for the heads and depressions for the points of the nails and is wound upon the reel F mounted upon a stud Z, set in the side of thelever B, and secured thereon by the spring catch Z as shown in Fig. 5.
The lever B has formed thereon or set therein a hub orpin m upon which are mounted, so as to be movable aboutits axis, the cam levers m and m which are normally held in raised positions by the springs Z and prospectively The lever m has pivoted to its free end the arm m adj ustably secured at its rear end to said lever m by means of the slot on and clamping screw m and has pivoted to its front end the feed pawl n the lower end of which engages with a projection on' the string of connected nails to feedthe same, it being pressed into engagement with said connected nails by means of the spring a connected at one end to a pin set in the arm m and at its other end to an arm n firmly secured on the outer end of the short shaft 77. upon the opposite end of which is firmly secured or ICO formed in one piece therewith the pawl at said shaft n having a bearing in the free end of the arm m as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
The jaw 13 has a second oblique groove 0 formed therein parallel with the groove and in near proximity thereto, in which is fitted, so as to be movable endwise therein, the notched bar 0', with the notch in the outer edge of which the free end of the lever m engages, so that "a vibration of said lever about its axis of motion will impart to said bar 0' a reciprocating endwise motion.
In the nose of the jaw B justbelow the lower ends of the pawl n and the bar 0' is formed a chamber in which is pivoted the nail re ceiver 0 provided with a longitudinal perforation of sufficient size to permit the passage of the nail, and so located that said perforation, when in an oblique position, will be in axial line with the string of connected nails to be fed, and when moved into aperpendicular'position will be in axial line with the nail driver a. The upper rear corner of the nail receiver 0 is beveled to form a cam like surface against which the correspondingly beveled lower end of the reciprocating bar 0 engages to move said receiver about its pivot into a perpendicular position, during which movement the upper end of said receiver co operating with the lower end of the pawl "n as a pair of shears severs a nail from the string and carries it into a perpendicular position beneath the driver which when it descends drives said nail into the shoe or boot being operated upon. When the bar 0 is moved upward again the receiver is moved into its normalor oblique position by the tension of the spring 0 acting upon a pin set in the side of the receiver 0 and projecting through a slot in the covering plate 0 The levers m and m have their upper edges made cam shaped, and are acted upon by the rollp carried on the inner end of the pin 11' in the short arm of the lever E, to depress them, said cam surfaces being so formed and arranged relative to each other that, the first part of the movement of the lever E caused by the pressure of the operators thumb upon the pad E at its rear end will depress the lever m and feed the nail wire downward without moving the lever m and then a continuation of said movement will depress the lever m move the bar 0 downward and thus sever a nail and move it into a position to be driven. The lever E is moved in the opposite direction, after being depressed by the operator, by the spring 19.
The lever O is mounted upon and movable about a stud set in, or formed in one piece with, the lever B, has its front or longer arm curved upward and downward to clear the hub of the lever E, and has formed upon its front end the shoulder q adapted to engage the shoulder e of the lifter bar 6, and has formed in the movable end of its rear or shorter arm a slot q with which the pin q set in the lever A engages to impart to said lever O a vibratory motion about its pivotal connection to the lever B for raising the driving plunger 0 preparatory to driving a nail.
The levers A and B are pivoted together by means of a hub r formed on one of said levers projecting into a bearing in the other lever with an annular space surrounding said hub in which is placed a coiled spring 8 surrounding said hub with one end connected, to the lever A and the other end to the lever B, in such a manner that the tension of said spring will tend to open the pincher jaws after they have been closed by the pressure of the operators hand.
The operation of improved lasting tool is as follows: The inner sole and upper of a boot or shoe being placed upon and tacked to the last, and the reel F, having wound thereon a quantity of the prepared Wire, forming what has herein been termed a string of connected nails, being placed in position on the stud Zwith the end of said wire passed down the oblique channel 70 past the spring 25 and the lower end of the pawl n when said pawl is in its raised position and the pincher jaws are open, the operator takes the tool in his right hand, with his fingers through the bow or loop of the lever B and the thumb through the bow or loop of the lever A with the end of the thumb above the pad E of the lever E, and placing the pincher jaws astrlde the edge of the upper, he presses the bows of the lovers A and B toward each other, thus causing the pincher jaws to seize the upper in a firm grip, and the lever C to raise the driving plunger 0 to its uppermost position,
when the spring h presses the stop pawl 9 into engagement with the shoulder a to lock said plunger in said raised position. The operator then, resting the hammer head I) as a fulcrum presses downward upon the handle end of the tool to s rain the upper and then pulls it over the inner sole, and then pressing the nose of the pincher jaw down upon the upper and inner sole he presses uponthe pad E of the lever E to depress 1t, the first effect of which is to cause the pawl n to be moved downward and feed the nail wire a distance equal to the length of a nail, and then to move the bar 0 downward to move the nail receiver 0 into a perpendicular position thereby severing a nail from the wire or string and conveying it into a perpendicular position beneath the driver 0 and then by a continuation of the downward movement of the pad end of the lever E, the pin 2" comes in contact with the front end of the slot 71 in the bar h and movesthe pawl g out of engagement with the shoulder e thus releasing the plunger 0 and permitting the tension of the spring D to force said plunger and the driver a downward with sufficient force to drive the nail in the upper and inner sole. When the thumb is raised and the grasp of the hand is relaxed the several parts will assume their normal positions, by the re actions of the several springs, with the jaws ICC opened the pawl n and bar 0' raised and the nail receiver 0 moved in an inclined position with its nail receiving orifice in axial line with the lower end of the nail wire preparatory to another like operation. When the operator has once pressed the bow ends of the levers A and B together and raised the driver plunger until it is locked by the pawl g, the pincher jaws may be operated an indefinite number of times, to strain and pull the upper, without operating the driver or being subject to any friction of said driver or the lever for lifting the same, provided he omits to press his thumb upon the lever E.
What I claim is- 1. In a hand lasting tool, the combination of a pair of pincher jaw levers pivoted together and crossing each otheras set forth; a nail delivering orifice through the nose of one of said-pincher jaws; a vertically movable driver mounted in a bearing in said jaw above, and in axial line with, said orifice, a spring applied to said driver to move it toward the nose end of said jaw; a vertically movable bar connected at one end to said driver and provided at its opposite end with shoulders e and c a lever pivoted to the jaw lever which carries said driver, and connected to, and vibrated by the other jaw lever and adapted to engage, at its free end, the shoulder e to raise said driver without being attached thereto; the pawl g constructed and arranged to engage the shoulder e and lock said driver, and maintain it in said raised position, while the pincher jaws may be operated an indefinite number of times; means having provision for automatically placing a nail in position in line with said orifice; and means having provision for tripping said pawl to release said driver.
2. In a hand lasting tool, the combination of a pair of pincher jaw levers pivoted to gether; a spring for opening said jaws; a hammer head on one of said jaws; a nail delivering orifice through the nose of the other jaw; a nail driving plunger mounted in a bearing in said jaw above said orifice; a spring connected to, and acting upon said plunger, and adapted to be strained when said plunger is raised; the lever C; the pin 1 the shouldered bar e connected to said driver; the oblique channels or grooves 7t and 0 formed in the jaw B; the cam levers m and m the lever m pivoted to and adjustable on the lever m; the feed pawl carried by the levers m m the nail receiver and carrier 0 pivoted in a cavity in the jaw B, and constructed and arranged to cooperate with the lower end of said feed pawl to sever a nail; the bar 0 for operating said receiver; the pawl g; the slotted link h and the thumb operated lever E.
3. The combination of the pincher jaws A and B provided respectively with the operatin g arms A and B; the driver 0, c, the lifter bar e provided with the shoulders e and e the lever C provided with the shoulder g at one end and the slot g at its other end, and
pivoted to the lever B; the stud (1 set in the lever A and engaging the slot (1'; the pawl g; the spring h; the bar h provided with the slot 1'; the lever E provided with the pin c projecting into said slot; and a nail delivering and guiding passage through the nose of the jaw B beneath the driver 0 c.
4. The combination of the pincher jaws A and B provided respectively with the operating arms A and B; a nail guiding orifice through said jaw B the driver 0 c; the channel for guiding the nail blank wire; the nail receiving and severing jaw 0 the receiver operating bar 0; the spring 0 the cam levers m and m the arm m adj ustably attached to the cam lever m; the pawl n; the springs Z Z and p; and the leverE pivoted to the lever B and provided at the end of its short arm with a truck to act upon the cam levers m and m and at its other end with the pad E all constructed arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
