CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,414, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed August 26, 1903. Serial No. 170,871. (N0 model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beitknown that I, GEORGE E. TOMLINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in car-couplings of the type known as automatic, and is adapted to cooperate or couple with any of the standard Master Car- Builders couplings. It has for its object to provide for the automatic coupling operation and insure the retention in operative position of the coupled parts as against accidental uncoupling, also to effect the ready uncoupling operation.
The nature of said invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by claims concluding the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a bottom View thereof. Fig. 2is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken just above and exposing the knuckle or hook locking device. Fig. 4 is avertical section produced in a line disclosing more particularly the pivot-shaft of the cam member of the knuckle or hook locking device. Fig. 5 is aperspective view of the sliding dog or latch.
In the carrying out of my invent-ion I suitably cast separately the draw-bar 1, the springheld head or buffer 2, and the knuckle or hook 3 in general outline of the usual construction, except in the particulars hereinafter disclosed. Said draw bar and head, as in my pending application, are provided with a shoulder l and with what is herein termed a tail 2, respectively, said shoulder abutting when the parts are in open position a corresponding surface 2' on said head and said tail being received in a laterally-opening recess 1 in said draw-bar, its extreme inner end being adapted to squarely abut or bear against the opposite surface or' shoulder-1, formed by said recess, all as shown and for the purpose set or hook receiving chamber of said draw-headf Within an elon- A cam member 6, having a tapered tooth 6, engaging a corresponding notch 6 in the dog or latch 5, is carried by a vertical pivotshaft 6", arranged to turn within the drawhead when actuated, which is effected by hand, as presently seen. Said shaft, whose lower end has passed through it below the drawhead a key 6, and upon it inserted a washer below said key, the purpose of which is obvious, has connected to it a spring 7 preferably coiled arouncl said shaft within a depress1on or recess in the draw-head and suitably secured to said draw-head, the action of said spring being to forcibly hold the dog or latch 5 in projected position, said action being transmitted through the cam 6 to the last named. Said shaft has also secured thereto at its lower end an arm or suitable means 6 which may be suitably improvised in connection therewith to' provide for conveniently actuating the cam 6 so as to cause the withdrawal of the latch when it is desired to disengage the last named from the knuckle or hook, as in effecting the uncoupling operation.
Assuming it is required'to effect the coupling operation, it will be seen that as the duplicate hooks or knuckles of approaching car draw-heads contact or engage, either one of which has been opened or extended, the inner tongue-like portion of the openedor extended hook or knuckle will be forced inwardly past the projected edge portion of the corresponding or opposite dog or latch, the resistance of its retaining-spring being thus overcome. Immediately said dog or latch, under the,recoil action of said spring, will return to its initial or projected position, and thus passing or being projected in front of said hook or knuckle inner tongue-like portion will lock said hook in coupled position with relation to the companion hook or knuckle of the opposite draw-head.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a car-coupling, a draw-head having a hook or knuckle locking dog or latch provided with a vertical offset or ledge, about midway a lateral surface thereof, and an actuating-cam therefor in effecting the uncoupling operation, said draw head having an elongated recess receiving that portion of said dog having said lateral ledge or offset, said ledge or'olfset engaging a shoulder formed by the forward edge of said recess.
2. In a car-coupling, a draw-head equipped with a hook or knuckle locking dog or latch provided with a notch or recess and its forwardend or edge adapted to occupy a nor- ,mally projected position in the hook or knucklereceiving chamber of said draw,
head, and a cam for actuating said dog in effecting the uncoupling operation, said cam havlng a tooth engaging sald notch.
3. In a car-coupling, adraW-head equipped with a hook or knuckle lockingdog or latch occupying a normally projected position in the hook or knuckle receiving chamber of said draw-head, a cam adapted to engage said dog or latch, and means for actuating said cam for automatically returning said dog or latch .to its initial position after the inner end of the knuckle or hook of a meeting drawhead has passed said dog or latch.
4:. In a car-coupling, a draw-head equipped with a hook or knuckle locking dog or latch occupying a normally projected position in the hook or knuckle receiving chamber of said draw-head and having a notch, a cam having a tooth engaging said notch, and means for actuating said cam for automatically returning said dog to its initial position, after the inner end of the knuckle or hook of a meeting draw-head has passed said dog or latch.
5. In a car-coupling, a draw-head equipped with a hook or knuckle locking dog or latch, a cam adapted to engage said dog or latch, and having its pivot or shaft adapted to turn in said draw-head, and a spring connected to said shaft and draw-head, whose action holds said dog or latch normally projected into the hook or knuckle receiving chamber of said draw-head. 6. In a car-coupling, the combination of a draw-head, a hook or knuckle locking latch or dog arranged in the chamber of said drawhead, a cam having a tooth or projection engaging said dog or latch, a shaft or pivot inserted into said cam and having a lateral notch, and a pin engaging said notch and inserted into draw-head.
