CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,703, dated September 28, 1897. Application filed December 14,1896. Serial No. 615,691. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GOETTEL, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of carcouplers that are automatic in their locking action and when uncoupled arealways ready to automatically look when the cars to which they are attached come together; and it consists in an arrangement by which the operation of uncoupling releases the jaw, throws it open, and secures the locking-block and its holding-latch in such positions that the holding-jaw is free to swing back into its coupling place and to self-lock itself.
My improved coupler is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of one of my couplers, the holding-jaw being represented as in its holding position. Fig. 2 is aview showing a part in horizontal section, the holding-jaw shown in full lines as closed and locked and in dotted lines as open. Fig. 3 is a view show ing the coupler in front elevation, the holdin g-j aw being omitted, so that the other parts may be clearly seen, Fig. i is a view in vertical section taken on line mm of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, the holding-jaw being omitted, as in Fig. 3, the locking-block being represented as in its raised position ready to drop into its locking position when the holding-jaw is closed. Fig. 6 isa detail view showing a modification of the block-holding latch.
The draw-bar A, of which my coupler device is a part, may be of any desired style and construction. Thepart A of the coup; ler-head is fixed and is made substantially as shown in- Figs. 1 and 2.
The-swinging holding-jaw n B is pivotally The rear part B of the" held by the bolt B jaw (see Fig. 2) is adapted to swing in back of the locking-block E.
bolt E by means of a pin E (See Fig. 2.) This pin E can be inserted or withdrawn through the opening A when desirable to at- (See Figs. 2 and The locking-block E is made fast to a square tach or remove the block E from the bolt E.
For the purpose of holding the locking-block E up, so as to leave the end B of the holdingjaw B B free to move, thus allowing the said jaw to open, I have a latch H, pivoted at H. This latch is so hung and balanced that its tendency is to fall forward and under the locking-block E whenever the said block is raised up. (See. Fig. 5.) The latch II has upon its front side a projection H so located that when the rear part B of the holding-jaw B B swings backward in the act of closing it comes in contact with the said projection and acting through it forces the latch to the left and out from under the locking-block, allowing it to fall in front of the part B, and thus locking the holding-jaw in its closed position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
The function of the bent lever D, which swings on a pivot D is to throw out the holding-jaw B B when the locking-block E is raised. The movement of the bent leverD is caused by the projection E which as the block is raised comes in contact with the uper end D of the lever and swin in it u p 7 2D 23 p ward causes its lower end D- to force the end Bof the holding-j aw B inward, thus causing the jaw to open.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a device to take the place of the latch II. This modification consists of a hook K, pivotallyhung at K to the shell A ofthe coupler. The horizontal part K serves to hook under the block E and hold it up in the same manner that the latch H would.
K is a small projection against which the rear part B of the holding-jaw acts in the same manner and for the same purpose as it would on the projection H on the latch H.
I claim In a car-coupler a holding-j aw pivotally attached to the draw-bar and having a rearward end adapted to engage with projections 011 a laterally-swinging latchand'throw it out of its position, said laterally swinging latch adapted to engage with and hold the lockingblock up out of its lockin g position, said locking-block adapted to fallbcfore the rear end .of the holding-jaw and lock it, also having a projection adapted to come in contact with a nztme to this specification, in the presence of bent lever and through it throw the holdingtwo subscribing Witnesses, on this 2d day of jaw open, the said bent lever adapted to be December, A. D. 1896.
operated by the" projection on the locking- JOHN GOETTEL.
