Description

No. 755,345. PATENTED MAR. 22, 1904. G.P.BENT. PIANO PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 20, 1902.
I H0 MODEL.
I I I UNITED STATES I Patented. March 22, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE...
GEORGE P. BENT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-PROTECTOR.
sPEc'mmAmn r part of Letters Patent No. 755,345, dated March 22, ,1904.
Application filed October 20, 1902.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE RBEN-T, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and usefulImprovement in Piano-Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for protecting pianos or other articles from being scratched or dented or otherwise injured by being knocked or rubbed against each other or against other articles or objects or having the latter brought into contact with them.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and practical device of this kind which can be readily applied to a piano or other articles and removed from the same with" I equal facility and which is particularly adapted for use in piano and other factories.
In this application I have shown a protective device adapted for use on pianos; but I do not wish to be considered as limiting myself to such adaptation, for obviously the invention-contemplates other devices of a generally similar character adapted for use in connection with other articles.
The device herein set forth for carrying out my invention in connection with pianos comprises a simple frame or other guard adapted to be applied to the lower or upper portion of the piano and adapted when so applied to project out beyond the ends and front feet of the piano. Thus when the piano is moved about the edge of the'protecting device will strike against the object or wall first, and thereby prevent the case of the piano from striking the same. In this way contact with the case will be effectively prevented and injury thereto avoided. The protective device preferably extends out also beyond the keyboard in front, and thereby protects the keyboard as well, thus insuring adequate protection to all the parts it is desired to protect.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piano having a protective device embodying my invention applied to it. Fig. 2 is aview of the protective Serial No. 128,025. (No model.)
device, the position of the piano upon the same beingindicated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the protective device with the position of the piano indicated in dotted ines.
Referring to the drawings, a piano A is shown in Fig. 1. This is understood to be any make ofupright piano. The protector B for protecting the piano is applied to the bottom of the same, as shown in Fig. 1. This protector is a suitably-constructed frame adapted for ready application to the bottom of the piano and also adaptedto project out from the front andends of the same. The form of frame shown comprises a front piece or strip 1, a pair of'side strips 2 2, and a pair of braces 3 3, extended diagonally between the strip 1 and end strips 2 2. The end strips 2 2 are desirably provided with indentations or cut-away portions 4. 4c. The frame thus constructed is secured to the bottom of the piano, a convenient method being to screw the end strips 2 2 thereto, the piano being for such purpose swung back on a supporting or carrying device common in piano factories. The end strips 2 2 are to such end provided with screw-holes 5 5. When thus applied to the piano, the front strip 1 will project beyond the front edges of the piano-feet, as shown in Fig. 1, and the end strips 2 2 will project beyond the ends of the piano, as shown in said figure. The cut away portions 4 1 in the strips 2 2 are to accommodate the casters. The strips 2 2 are desirably provided with edge pieces 6 6 to prevent the guard or protector from slipping under the piano. The end strips 2 2 desirably extend back slightly beyond the back of the piano also, thereby affording protection on the rear as well as on the front and ends.
Itwill be seen that the protector thus formed can be easily and cheaply made, consisting of but a few strips of wood properly made and fitted together. It will also be seen that it can be readily applied to either the lower or upper horizontal surface of the piano and is not objectionable, and, further, the device can be readily applied to pianos of different makes and sizes, the distance between the end strips 2 2 being sufiicient to accommodate any length of piano, and the strips being of such length as to accommodate any depth.
It will be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to the specific form of structure herein shown and described, as it is deemed possible to vary the construction and arrangement of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim. as my invention is 1. A piano-protector comprising a fiat rectangular frame adapted to be applied to a horizontal surface of a piano and to extend across the same from side to side and front to rear and adapted also to project out in front of the piano-legs and beyond the sides of the 20 piano, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class specified, comprising a rectangular frame, consisting of a front strip 1, end strips 2, 2, having edge pieces 6, 6, and braces 3, 3, the whole constituting a flat frame adapted to be removably secured to the bottom of a piano and to project out beyond the edges thereof when the piano is in a vertical position.
In witness whereoflhereunto subscribe my 3 name this 10th day of October, A. D. 1902.
GEO. P. BENT.
