HENRY P. SCHOFIELD, OF CHICAGO., ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO COVEL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORA- TION OF ILLINOIS. n
SAW-GUIDE. y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 55,318, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed May 27, 1903.
To-ctZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. SCHOFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to sawguides adapted to be arranged'about a savvsharpening machine for the purpose of supporting a band-saw while the sharpeningoperation is being carried on.
My primary object is to provide a device of this character which will permit ready insertion and removal of the saw, and yet will permit the saw to move freely in the guide.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents an elevational view of my improved saw-guide supporting a fragment of a saw; Fig. 2, a Vbroken view of the standard,I taken, as indicated, at line 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a similar view of the opposite side of the standard, taken, as indicated, at line 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4f, a broken vertical section taken, as indicated, at line 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 a broken section taken, as indicated, at line 5 of Fig. l.
A description of the preferred construction is as follows: A represents .a ,Suitable base provided with a tubular standard A, having a vertical opening A3; A3, a member having a telescoping connection with the tubular portion A/ and equipped with a rack a, exposed at the opening A3; Ai, a 'shaft journaled in suitable bosses on the tubular portion A and equipped with a pinion A3, meshing with the rack a, and equipped also with a handle A3; A7, a set-screw for fixing the member A3 at any desired height; B, a guide-head provided with a depending stem B', journaled in a socket with which the upper end of the member AS is provided; B3, a grooved roller having a shaft o supported in the fixed portion of the head B; B3, fixed vertical guide members with which the head B is provided and which serve.
as guide-walls or bearings for one side of the Saw, and B4 a pair of pivoted members coact- Serial No. 158,946. (No model.)
on a pivot f, extending parallel with the saw, Y
and is provided at its base, adjacent to the pivot, with a cam or extension f', which extends through a slot f2 at the base of the corresponding member B3. The head B is equipped adjacent to the base portions of the members B3 and between the slots f3 with levers f3, supported on pivots f4 and having short camarms f3, which serve to. engage the short arms o-r cams f' of the members B4L in the vertical position. This is clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. The channel C has at its bottom shoulders g, which are formed at Vther inner sides of the stationary members B3. The grooved roller B2 projects above these shoulders and supports the saw.
From the foregoing description it Will be understood that the saw may be entered in the channel and supported on the roller B3, While the members B4L are in the vdropped position,A after which themembers may be vraised to the vertical standing position and locked by the levers f3. The importance of this construction will be understood when it is explained that saws of, this character are usually very heavy, making it a difficult operation to enter them into narrow guides.
It Will be understood that changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention may be made. Hence no undue limidetailed description.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A saw-guide, comprising a standard provided with a stationary guide member having perforations, pivoted guide members having short arms at their lower ends entering said tation is to be understood by the foregoing Y perforations and capable of being dropped from their vertical position, and locking devices for engaging said arms supported on pivots adjacent to said perforations, for the purpose set forth.
2. A saw guide, comprising a standard equipped with a guide-head having two vertical stationary guide members, a roller journaled in said head between said guide members, pivoted guide members opposed to said firstnamed guide members and having short camarms at their lower ends, and a pair of camlevers supported on pivots perpendicular to said guidel members, for the purpose set forth.
3. A saw-guide, comprising a base portion having a tubular standard provided at one side of its upper portion with a slot and flanking lugs, a shaft journaled in said lugs, and equipped with a handle and pinion, a guidehead for a saw having a vertical guide-channel, and a stem swivelly supporting said guidehead and telescoping with said tubular standard and provided with a rack engaged by said pinion, for the-purpose set forth.
HENRY P. SCHOFIELD.
In presence of# W. B. DAvIns, WALTER N. VVINBERG.
