TABLE FOR GAINING-MACHINES.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent; No. 322,237, dated July 14, 1885.

To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL ADAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a ynew and useful Improvement in Machines for Cutting or Grooving String-Boards, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a top or plan view of a machine for cutting or grooving string-boards embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof in line a x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view ofthe rotary table of the machine. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of a portion thereof in line y y, Fig. 1, enlarged.

My invention consists of a machine for cutting or grooving string-boards embodying an angularly-adjustable guide, a rotary table, a novel clamping device, and a stop for adjusting the length of the cut or groove in the string-board.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bed of the machine, and B represents a rotary table mounted.- thereon by means of-a thimble or collar, C, which is freely fitted within a thimble or collar, D, on said bed, the cutter or grooving tool E passing through said thimble O.
Within the side pieces, F, of the rotary table B is tted a sliding table, G, a portion of which is cut away or spaced in a longitudinal direction, as at H, and the tool E projects into said space. The inner faces of the side pieces, F, are provided with rollers J, and the sides of the table G are provided with rollers K, whereby the said table may be operated with ease and precision in its advancing and returning motions.
Hinged to a cross-bar at one end of vthe table G is a clamp or clamping-arm, L, and connected with said table at the opposite ends thereof are spring-catches M, which are adapted to engage with the clamp or arm L, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4.
Hinged to the handle end of the clamp L is a bar, N, for releasing the catches M from their holding action on said clamp L.
0n the end of the sliding table G, adjacent to the handle of the clamp L, is an adjustable stop, l?, the nose Q of which is adapted to abut againstthe table B, and thus limit the play of said table G and adjust the length of the out or groove formed in the string-piece by the tool E.
To the table G is secured. an annulus, R, in which are segmental slots S to receive the screw-bolts T of the guide U, the latter being pivoted to the table G.
The operation is as follows: The bar N is removed from the position shown in dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 4, to that shown by the full lines (in section) in said Fig. 2, that is to say, it is advanced toward the catches M, and forced against the same, whereby the catches are pushed out from the clamp L, and by holding the bar in contact with the clamp the latter may be raised, so that the stringpiece to be grooved may be placed againstthe guide U, the latter being adjusted to the angle it is desired to advance the string' piece to the tool E, and the nuts of the bolts T being properly tightened, it being noticed that the table G is provided with graduations V, in order to adjust the angle of the guide U with niccty and correctness. The clamp is then lowered, whereby it is engaged and held by the catches M, the bar N being thrown up to the position shown by the dotted lines,

and the groove formed in said board. The table is now returned and the bar N lowered, whereby the clamp is released, and the board is then moved along the guide U the distance required for the next groove, after which the clamp is again secured by the catches M, and
the table may be advanced for the motion of IOC ' groove to the other, the table B has a mark,
X, which readily guides the Workman in determining correct distances, as is evident.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A cutting or grooving machine provided with the rotary table B, mounted on the bed of the machine, and the sliding table G, fitted in guides on said rotary table, substantially table B, having collar C and guides F, sliding table G, provided with slotted annulus R andy 2o clamps D, and guide U, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a cutting and grooving machine, arotary table mounted on the bed of the machine,
a sliding table fitted to said rotary. table, a 25 guide pivoted to said sliding table, a clamp extending across said sliding table and secured by a clamp at one end thereof, and clamps connecting the rotary and sliding tables, all
