PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. THOMAS, JR, OF GERMANTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,258, dated March 2 2, 1904.
Application filed August 19, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. THOMAS, Jr. a citizen of the United States, residing at Germantown, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a cleat or fastening device especially useful with frames for stretching leather; and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of the cleat.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a frame for stretching leather, having at suitable points a cleat embodying main features of my Fig: 2 is an enlarged top or plan view of the cleat detached from the frame. Fig. 3 is an underneath plan View of said cleat, and Fig. 4 is a side elevational view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame, within which the hide or skin 03 isarranged to be stretched. B represents the clamping means, having a flexible cord or chain 0, and E represents the cleats secured to the frame A and arranged to receive the inafter specified. These cleats E are arranged upon the cross-bars a and the vertical bars a Serial No. 169,984. (No model.)
between the corners a of the frame at points required.
Referring to Figs. 2, 3, and 4:, the construction and arrangement of the cleat E is as follows: A disk 6, of metal, is struck up from a flat polygonal base 6 into upwardly and outwardly projecting wings 6 extending from the perimeter of the base 6. These wings e overlap each other at contiguous edges to form contracted openings or slots, into which the cord or chain 0 can be readily inserted or removed, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The base 6 is preferably perforated, as at 6 to permit the base a to be nailed or screwed to the frame A or other supporting means.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cleat, consisting of a disk of metal struck up to form a flat polygonal base and wings projecting upwardly and outwardly from the perimeter of the base, said wings arranged so that their contiguous edges overlap to form contracted openings or recesses, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM B. THOMAS, JR.
