- chusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pattens, of which the fol= lowing is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same. reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved patten; Fig. 2, a top or plan View; Fig. 3, a bottom view, and Fig. 4 a vertical transverse section taken on line 00 00 in Fig. 2.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates to that class of pat tens which are provided with adjustable calks; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, the object being to provide a more effective and otherwise desirable article of this character than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following vm, consists of a plate corresponding approximately in form and size with the sole of the patten with which it is to be worn, and provided with a series of holes or perforations, z. The lower section, f, is composed of a stout wire or rod bent to correspond with the outlines of the plate m, and connected by the horizontallyarranged cross-bars it.

Two calks, h, are inserted in each of the bars 25, the 'calks consisting of screws provided with sharpened points which project through the lower sides of the bars, as shown in Fig. 1, and with angular heads 1', as best seen in Figs. 2 and 4.

Each of the plates K is provided with a headed screw, b, at its center,which passes downwardly through said plate, and is fitted to work in a correspondingly-threaded hole in the bar it The object of the plate K is to prevent the calks h from accidentally turning back in use, or to hold them in position when set, this being accomplished by turning in the screw b, and thereby forcing the plate down until it engages the heads i of the calks. The head c of each of the calks h is tapering, or smaller at its top than at its base, so that when the screw 1) is turned out and the plate K raised the calks may be turned either in or out, as desired, to adjust them, without raising the plate K above the tops of the calks.

A hole, a, is formed in the section or plate in, above each of the screws 12, for inserting said screws. A hole, Z, is also formed in said plate above each of the calks h, to enable said calks to be inserted in the plate t.

Any suitable straps or fastenings may be employed for the patten, instead of the straps D E, if preferred. The holes 2 and flanges B C may also be omitted, if desired.

- Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a patten substantially such as described, the section m, provided with the flanges B O and straps D E, in combination with the section f, and suitable calks for preventing patten from slipping, said sections being connected by the pillars 01, substantially as described. 2.
