SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I755,126, dated March 22, 1904.

Be it known that I, FRANK FRsT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to that class of fruitpresses in which the fruit may be both macerated and pressed; and my improvements-consist in the details hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved press. Fig. 2 is an elevation of part of the compressing mechanism, showing the clutch disconnected. Fig. 8 is a top View of the ring-clutch. Fig. 4: is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the top of the follower-sleeve. Fig. 6 is a top View of the same; and Fig..7 is a bottom view of the follower, partiallybroken away.

The base of the press is Vformed of a single piece of metal A, provided with a circumferential gutter a, a discharge-nozzle hand a circular groove c. A rod B isscrewedV into the center of the base A and carries a thread upon its upper part to receive the hand-wheel D, the hub CZ of which is forked at one end, as at d, while the other end terminates in an even surface, as at f. i
G is the follower, provided with pyramidal teeth g g g on the under side and with perforations h la L and carrying a sleeve H, which v slides on the rod B. The upper endof the sleeve H is forked like the forked end of the hub d, and between the hub and the sleeve I interpose the clutch I, which is recessed to lit over the top of the sleeve H and has raised portions rl z', adapte to interlock with the forked end al" of the hub d. Along the under and left-hand edges of these raised portions c' il I place ribs or stops j j', which when the clutch is rotated will strike against the upper angles of the forked end of the sleeve H.
When the holder K is placed on the base A, resting in the groove therein, the fruit to be pressed placed therein, as indicated by L L holder, a base provided withaguide and pres- 10Q i in Fig. 1, the follower Gislid down over the rod B, the clutch I placed upon the top of the sleeve H, and the hand-wheel D, with the forked end of the hub d down, screwed down on the nod B, the forked end of the hub d will engagewith the projections 2l -Q on the clutchcollar I, rotating it also, and the lugs j j, engaging with the angles of the fork on the end of the sleeveH, will carry the sleeve and the follower G around also, causing the teeth or projections g g to macerate and level off the upper part of the mass offruit as the follower descends. If it is desired to discontinue this macerating operation, the hand-wheel is reversed, carrying the clutch-collar back with it. The collar 4will now slide freely in the reversed direction on the end of the sleeve H until the projections c' el are in line above the recesses in the forked end of the sleeve H, when they will drop into and ill up such recesses, letting the collar down on the sleeve, the tops of the projectionsz' c' and of the forked end of the v sleeve forming an even surface upon which the forked end of the hub al may turn without engaging. l
, In a case when a positive locking engagement only is desired the clutch-collar I may Ybe left o andthe forked hub interlocked di-v rectly with the forked end of the sleeve H, and in a case when it is not desired to rotate the follower the smooth end of the hub may be run down` either upon the clutch-collar or directly upon the top of the sleeve, giving an unlocked connection.
It is obvious that the'juices expressed from the fruit will pass up through the openings t /1/ in the follower G, as well as out through the openings c lc in the holder K, and falling into the gutter a pass out through the spout.k
To prevent the juices from being forced up and out of the top of the sleeve H, I make an opening m near its base, through which the juice may run out on top of the follower G, and
,thence out through the holes in the sides of the holder K.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of the United States, is-
1. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a i sure rod, a follower provided with a forked sleeve and sliding upon said rod, and an actuating hand-wheel mounted upon said rod and proy vided with a forked hub to form a detachable, rotating clutch connection between such follower and hand-wheel, substantially,T as set forth.
2. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a holder, a base provided with a guide and pressure rod, a follower provided with a forked sleeve and sliding upon said rod, an actuating hand-wheel mounted upon said rod and provided with a hub forked at one end and uniform at the other end to form an alternative rotating or non-rotating connection between such follower and hand-wheel, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a holder, a base provided with a guide and pressure rod, a follower provided with a forked sleeve and sliding upon said rod, an actuating hand-wheel mounted upon said rod and provided with aforked hub, and a ring-clutch in terposed between the follower-sleeve and the hand-wheel hub to lock the same in rotating connection in one direction and to be unlocked by reversing the rotation of the hand-wheel, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a holder, a base provided with aguide and pressure rod, a follower provided with a forked sleeve and sliding upon said rod, an actuating hand-wheel mounted upon said rod and provided with aforked hub, and a clutch-collar provided with fingers having ribs or stops on their under edges to engage with the upper angles of the forked sleeve, such fingers being in detachable connection with the forked hub of said hand-wheel, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a holder, a base provided with a guide and pressure rod, afollower having asleeve and sliding upon said rod, an actuating hand-wheel mounted upon said rod, and a ring-clutch adapted to slide down on such follower-sleeve out of connection with said actuating hand-wheel, substantially as set forth.
6.. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a holder, a base provided with a central, guide and pressure rod, a follower provided with a sleeve to slide upon such central rod, said sleeve having a juice-port near its junction with the follower, and an actuating hand-wheel mounted upon said rod, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a base provided with a circumferential gutter, a discharge-duct, an annular groove and acentral screw-threaded rod, a perforated holder seated within said groove, a perforated follower provided with projections on its under side and having a sleeve sliding upon said rod, an actuating hand-wheel threaded upon said rod, and a detachable clutch connection between such sleeve and hand-Wheel, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, in a fruit-press, of a base provided with a circumferential gutter, a discharge-duct, an annular groove and a central screw-threaded rod, aperforated holder seated within said groove, a perforated follower provided with projections on its under side and having a sleeve sliding upon saidrod, an actuating hand-wheel threaded upon said rod,and a detachable clutch connection consisting of a sliding collar between such sleeve and handwheel, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination,in a fruit-press,of a base provided with acircumferential gutter, a discharge-duct, an annular groove, and a central screw-threaded rod, a perforated holder seated within said groove, a perforated follower provided with projections on its under side and having a forked sleeve sliding upon said rod, an actuating hand-wheel threaded upon said rod and having a forked hub, substantially as set forth.
